Whoever did it won't be very welcome in Northumberland, assuming they live here ... I walk in the area regularly, and know 'the tree' location very well. I know/ it's 'only a tree', and there are far worse things happening in the world, but there's room for sadness and regret in all sorts of things, and this is one. It's a special place for many people, spoiled by an idiot. There's also a lot of anger here too ... whoever did it should start making plans to move house.

If this is so, it seems to be a singularly ill thought out act of "revenge". The tree did not actually bring in income for NT (to the best of my knowledge), the (Roman) Wall is administered by English Heritage, I believe. The only connection the tree has with NT is that it is/was growing on their land.
