I've been following this with interest. However I can't recall seeing any that are in the same county as me or even any neighbouring counties. I guess that's one consequence of living inland.

However I also tried to recall any memorable chippies from my travels and I sadly failed. Or at least I failed to remember any that were specifically outstanding - except to add the caveat that sometimes when there are few options, it's late and you're hungry even a mediocre establishment can seem good.

I do recall a decent platter of F&C from the The Start Bay Inn near Slapton. And my local pub consistently does the best chips I have ever eaten, as well as a decent battered fish, but this is really a local pub for local people. Beyond that I'm out. If anybody has any suggestions in/around South Oxfordshire I'm all ears. The ones we have used around here are OK and fill a hole but nothing to write to a forum about.

Millbrook fish and chip shop was a good one, in Grove, just north of Wantage. Last time I was there anyway. Nice chips, and fish cooked to order. The Chinese chippy in Faringdon was gross. Otherwise, I would say your neck of the woods is something of a F and C desert....

Thanks - just looked it up and it gets a good review; I sometimes cycle very close to there too... It's just a little too far to fetch for taking home but worth remembering for out-and-about times, should they return.

the north west.
lancashire.
looking forward to being there again soon once this hell is over.
and sampling the local chinese chippy again.
(it's pretty to very good/very consistent, though maybe not quite worthy of entry in this thread)
You'll be missing gravy on your chips living down there then.

Talking of Wigan....ever had a Wigan kebab?
For the uninitiated that's a meat and potato pie wrapped in a barmcake. I jest not.
Delish, although I go for a steak pie to give a better protein/carbs balance.

On the subject of M+P pies, a long time ago they suddenly became potato and meat instead, as bakers quietly lowered the meat content thinking that no one would notice.

And meat and potato pies. Can't get them anywhere down south (that ive been to anyway), only chicken & mushroom, steak & kidney or beef & onion. All way inferior to a good meat and potato pie, esp the way they're complemented by mushy peas.

Edit: re gravy, delicious on pie and chips (although you still have to have vinegar on the chips first); sacrilege on fish and chips. If just chips, has to be curry sauce or mushy peas.
