Thanks for this in particular - apt as the same Maconie book that started this thread actually includes a trip to Silloth.
I'd never heard of the place, and something about the name sounds dodgy/horrible to my ears, so I looked it up and it sounds well worth a visit/bike ride, with - thanks to you - some fish and chips.
It's a genteel kind of seaside place, not an amusement arcade in sight as far as I can remember, and there's a small independent hotel over the road from the chippy called The Golf Hotel, quite basic but one of the best hotel breakfasts that I've ever had.

It's a nice place, but there's not much there for teenagers. 😊
P1ssing down, nowt open on the caravan park...."dad is this your idea of fun!"

Theres a nice cobbled street

Sit down, in the Fish-over-Chips, Grange-over-Sands. Take away, The Old Toilets, Greenodd. Although with any chippy it depends on being lucky in getting served before the food has stood too long.
Yes! Watching the basket go in for the second fry and hoping that your place in the queue will be perfectly timed to coincide with fresh fresh chips.
The two chippies I recommended for anyone unfortunate enough to pass through Hale near Altrincham footy ground and in Urmston only fry fish to order, a very good thing. I recall as a youth swerving on any chippie that had fish slowly dehydrating in their batter in the lockers on the counter.

The best I've had in recent years was Papas on Cleethorpes pier. Enormous, really tasty fish in light, crunchy batter, and the chips were crispy but not greasy. Just divine.

Hungry now!
Trouble with Papas is they're great when they first open, but after a while, the quality goes down, they seem to supply the best stuff to their new places for a while. The one in Bilton was great at first, now we avoid it.

Papas on the Quay in Sandwich is always ace. Great light crispy batter and splendid chips.

Often queues outside at tea time. 2 miles from me.

Properly cooking chips is a vastly under-rated art/science.
I was going to ask you to dredge up the name of the place but if they can't do chips forget it
(I would make an exception if their signature dish of fish had a place right next door whose signature dish was chips)
When buying fish and chips in Ulverston, I go to one place for the fish and peas, while Hover fly goes down the road for the chips.

Mr Chips on Wick Lane in Harwich. Its near the sea front.

Bearing I live in Denmark and have never lived anywhere near Harwich. This has got to be a serious recommendation ^_^

I found this when I came over on the ferry, when it was running. I came over to the UK to collect a motorbike and came across this chippy which I believe is run by a Vietnamese family. Huge cod and chips. It was great sitting on the sea front eating fish and chips. It is something I miss doing.

names of the kit suppliers please? Assuming of course that both are worthy of a plug here. I have a plan to cycle Ulverston way.

(by the by - I plan to sit down sometime and add all or near all places in this thread as offline markers on my tab's OSMand - looking forward to some merry trips)

genteel and nice isn't what youngsters want though is it? Hence as a kid my preference for day trips to Blackpool over Southport, where I didn't give a sod that Napoleon 3 thought Lord Street very pleasant. And hence my avatar

Chippy near me only puts your fish in when you order it so it is always fresh and not sat under the heat lamps. Chips are cooked in small batches so no soggy, half cold, bottom of the pile stuff.

Regularly wins awards, but doesn't every chippy?
