Walking past a chip shop last night,i fancied a fish with mushy peas. Being a tight wad (a fool and his money are soon parted ) i always check the prices before ordering and was amazed to see that a fish(Haddock)was a staggering four pounds!! I was expecting two pounds eighty pence maybe, but four bloody quid for a fish!!

Edit...and the peas were £1.50!!!!

You'll be missing gravy on your chips living down there then.
never had it - seems horrible.
Like mushy peas though.

Another northern tightwad here - if it's a takeaway to eat at home I use Lidl mushy peas. Not at all bad. 15p or so,

names of the kit suppliers please? Assuming of course that both are worthy of a plug here. I have a plan to cycle Ulverston way.

(by the by - I plan to sit down sometime and add all or near all places in this thread as offline markers on my tab's OSMand - looking forward to some merry trips)
Chippy Bank for fish and peas, Lakeland Continental, same street, for the chips, but if you’re cycling round here, “the old toilets”* in Greenodd is better For both, or the Priory Plaice,**just on the edge of town on the coast road to Barrow.
*Not its proper name.
**Also in a closed public toilet.

Don't tarry in Ulverston town, your soul will be sold from underneath your feet and without your knowing. This is an immutable truth.
The place may be safer since the closure of Buffers but its still possible your innocent night out may not end for days.

If you are looking for "interesting" Wetherspoons, there is a one in Keswick. The building used to be the Police Station and Cells. Very quaint. It is called "The Chief Justice of the Common Pleas"
 I spent a couple of hours in there but not drinking beer. About 39 years ago, they did bring fish and chips for tea though. Civilised under the circumstances of being a criminal about to be charged for possession of 0.4 g of resin.
The fish and chips were not the best mind you.
Place and time of arrest? Just before the Honister pass at Gatesgarth 3pm.
Was a roadblock with following R80 motorcycle from where we set off at the foot of High Style.
Total crime haul for police 7 grams assorted between the 4 of us.
It was actually a stakeout of my friends car, we saw the motorcycle parked further up the road toward Crummock Water as we descended High Style.
Total personnel at scene of arrest, 9 with 4 vehicles.
Why my friends parked Sunbeam attracted the attention of the police none involved is the wiser. We walked to Ennerdale and camped there and on the coast for a night then walked back, 3 days in all.
£50 +£15 costs, good job my employer never found out.

I'll never forget the fish and chips we all bought on bonfire night 1989,when i worked in an old folks home. I had mushy peas with mine. When i opened the wrapper i counted about 11 peas! I went back to the shop to complain and to see mushy peas were 15p a portion. I told the owner that it worked out at more than 1p per pea. He got stroppy and came out with a barrel glass pint pot, filled it up to the brim with mushy peas, them slammed it on the counter saying "That enough for you"?! 'Yes thank you' i replied and left feeling rather smug.😇

How do you place your order. Round here we say “one of each”. I don’t have to go far for this to make no sense, and it’s dying out locally too. Do I recall a Scotsman’s portion being a “poke”?

Round here it's once, twice or three times, depending on how many portions, it always struck me as funny in Thirsk to hear the term one of each

There's another map in the making here: "Britain - A FIsh and Chip Gazeteer". I'm on the blower to Penguin right now.

There already is one for sauces:
