They're contiguous countries defined by lines on a map. Iceland and Greenland are islands.

It’s dependent on where you draw the most easterly point.
To get that to make sense you would have to argue that Alaska is so far west that it crosses the date line and becomes far easterly.

I can't be entirely sure due to the small scale but it looks like that map does indeed include Attu Island, aka the most western point of the USA. So far west that it is in the eastern hemisphere. The maps also clearly shows USA being west, north and south of Iceland. Don't make me open MS paint.
