Why kerb and curb? Why the need for two different spellings?
They are different things. Just like the bow of a ship is a different thing to the bough of a tree.

It irritates me to see the edge of the road spelt curb instead of kerb, to me it looks wrong, but the OED allows either spelling.
Unless you are in Liverpool, in which case its 'kirb'.
