While reading an article yesterday about a certain football team/club I read "They've now won an 18th title". I changed the word 'an' for 'a'. It didn't go with 18th. Yet it goes with 'a first title' up till 'a 19th title' and beyond, except when you get to 8th and then it's back to 'an 8th'. I'm probably missing something obvious here, so no mocking if I am please!! 🧐 :okay:

It is generally 'a' before a word starting with a consonant, or 'an' before a word starting with a vowel.

I believe that is because 'a' followed by a vowel means you have to insert an awkward pause, which just sounds wrong.

Grammar dear boy, grammar is the reason. Spelling of 18 or eight begins with an E.
So since it's a vowel, it's perfectly correct to spell with an..
Tho' since the number notation is numerical, you may be correct in substitution of A for An.
Phonetically it's more correct to pronounce an, in my opinion.

We need an English language / literature professor to rule.

This, in the old days when I went to school we were taught to write a number in word form when it was part of a sentence.

As in "When I'm MCMIV years old I will post to a forum"?

I bought this thermometer a few weeks ago. I've noticed that in the recent 'hot' weather it reads 62 Fahrenheit 14 Celsius all the time. I placed it in my fridge to see what happens and as you can see in the bottom pic' it dropped to just above freezing. My kitchen where it's placed would be about 76 Fahrenheit in this weather, so why does this thermometer constantly keep showing/reading 62 Fahrenheit ?! 🤔

Try another area of the Kitchen. It could be because it is placed too close to a portal to another dimension...

And after they won the title, they went to stay in an hotel ...
