I never really liked the Smiffs at the time, but thought they were 'interesting'... now I find I have a retrospective admiration for a lot of their stuff... intelligent music for the most part, and good listening, although I'd never wave my gladioli in public.
This was my experience of The Smiths too.
Sometimes you can 'get-into' a band at a later date. I was much the same with Springsteen, it was only being dragged to the 'Born in the USA' tour that completely changed my opinion of him ... within a few seconds! Listen to his 1975 live at Hammersmith Odeon album to hear a fantastic band on full throttle, nothing spared. Thunder road is fabulous, the Man and Piano.
Most of my record collection has been savaged here, having been largely raised with Prog-Rock, (I was into classical music before pop so it's no surprise), but fortunately I have developed a wide musical taste.
Bands that don't do it for me:
The Fall
Flock of seagulls
I detest the Thompson Twins
Not big on much of the Manc scene
New order - may be heresy, but never saw what the fuss was about.
The Beatles, I can take or leave.
Bowie, some odd songs are OK, but can't do the whole Ziggy thing.
There are many more, Her whineyness is Adele currently annoying the Fcuk out of me at the moment.
