If you've never heard the Trilogy album, it is definitely worth a listen.

If anyone recommends something to me in that way, I take them up on it. Report back on my findings once I've investiga... listened to it.

Right, this should upset someone!

Bob Dylan - Has written some great songs, but why the bleeping hell he insists on "singing" them I'll never understand.

Ultravox.

The Police (although I like some of their stuff, it's just Sting's strangulated vocals I can't bear).

James Brown.

Procul Harum.

Frank Zappa. What was that all about?
[/quote]

Zappa was all about the musicianship. Which was absolutely top notch, whatever you think of his music. I'm not the world's no. 1 fan myself, but I find myself occasionally trawling youtube for live Zappa videos and thinking "how do they do that?" as I watch them. And there are one or two really good songs, too.

Well, you may not like his stuff, but mediocre he is not IMVVHO.

 Great. I'm not a big fan of Prince either, but that video shows him to be a great rock guitarist. And all on a cheap Hohner telecatser copy!

Not sure there is a clear distinction being made between 'didn't get' and 'didn't like', but under either category I nominate The Smiths...

I entirely agree, never could stand their music. The really irritating thing about not liking The Smiths though, is that people who do like them continually tell you that you just haven't "got" them yet and you need to listen to them more. Er, no, I don't. I just don't like the noise they make, and that's about all there is to it.

Damn! How could I have forgotten that pile of tripe? On second thoughts forgetting it is probably the best thing I could have done!

I agree...

I didn't like the manufactured pop stuff/artists that was Stock, Aitken, and Waterman, which paved the way for it to be acceptable to hype something up and convince the public that they like it (which is why we have to put up with the xfactor now!).

However, I didn't get the whole reggae thing in the 70's monkey spanner, desmond decker, and all of the Uptight stuff - maybe I don't have the right rhythm?

I also didn't get the Beatles either!

And even though it is on my ipod, I still don't quite get the late Pink floyd stuff, it seems like they weren't quite sure how to top the success of Dark Side of the Moon - which was, and still is, a timeless classic

I think early Genesis were way ahead of their time which is why a lot of people didn't get them, and when their time did arrive, Phil was off doing his own thing and they missed the boat. But the early stuff, although it seems a bit dated is still relevant.

I never did get all the prog rock stuff at all, and I really really hated Genesis, and still do. Never been a fan of heavy metal, apart from some Motorhead and Thin Lizzy (you may argue the Lizzies aren't heavy, but you know what I mean).

What's quite strange is I hated The Smiths and Morrissey in general back in the 80s/90s but in the last few years I've heard some stuff on the radio and thought it was quite good!

I never really liked the Smiffs at the time, but thought they were 'interesting'... now I find I have a retrospective admiration for a lot of their stuff... intelligent music for the most part, and good listening, although I'd never wave my gladioli in public.
