I personally am not a fan of wearing a helmet and do believe it should be down to an individual's choice. But I am not 100% sure that the current design/material of a helmet is quite right, and don't ask me what "right" would be

I voted in it but couldn't see what the results were? I know the poll is still open, but does anyone have any idea what the current state of play is?

Some of the questions were very leading, and I noticed in the question about the ways to improve cyclists' safety there was no mention of any other road users (although I, like many of you I'm sure) used the dialogue box to put in driver education.

I think they usually publish the results after the poll has closed. To be fair to them, I've always felt they are pro-cycling and that they have reasonable polls.

Number plates and average speed cameras, limiting the speed to 20mph unless on a dual carriageway. Obviously most off roaders couldn't average that, so would be subject to heavy goods vehicle laws and 15mph.

Why on earth do we want to limit speed to 20mph?? Some people are quite capable of driving at 30 or 40 or 50mph and still observing cyclists and other roasd users around them.

I used the dialogue box to say whenever possible I cycled in France rather than the UK as driver attitudes to cyclist are better. Which in my experience they are.

I have highlighted the key word.

To be fair to the IAM that is the sort of message they constantly put out to their members. But when advising on road safety their stance is pro-active, it is no use whinging about what someone else does, when you are on the road your safety is in your own hands, be you on two wheels or four.

That was certainly my experience of IAM, even at local club level, when I was involved with them. A great deal of emphasis on awareness, observation and anticipation.

And SOME cyclists put themselves in dangerous positions so do we ban cycling because of the some? You can't dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator all the time or we'll all be wrapped in bubblewrap and told to stay at home.

There is also the fact that anyone hit by a car travelling at 20mph will survive the impact. There really is no need for speed limits higher than 20mph in urban areas. It works well enough in the US where they have 25mph limits in residential areas, and 15mph limits in school zones.

There is a site in the US Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute

It is a "pro helmet" site, but actually talks a lot of sense including the problems of modern design and how helmets can cause injury as well.

They have an excelent section on design from the material of teh helmet itself to the buckles and straps!

A site worth reading

So ban cars from EVER doing more than 20mph then nobody will EVER get hurt. Let's just agree to disagree!
