First it will be helmets for kids on bikes.
Then it will be the Thudguard for all day everyday playing

Or perhaps bubble-wrap suits?

Well the replies are a breath of fresh air.

Personally I feel that the wearing of helmets DOES prevent serious head injury in case of a fall, collision or head impact. If the wearing a helmets becomes compulsory for cyclists, it should also be compulsory for drivers, pedestrians, office workers and most definitely children playing!

Like many folk my age, we grew up on our bikes... my brother and I wanted to be stunt men when we grew up so spent lots of time training, building ramps (big bro jumped seven children on his Grifter!), doing big skids, even deliberately crashing spectacularly. He wont let his kids go out on their bikes without their helmets on, and in light of this they seldom go out on their bikes, which is a shame.

I'm totally against it being compulsory for kids... as a child is your job to take risks and occasionally injure yourself.

Wrapping them in cotton wool and discouraging them from risky play does children no good at all.

Maybe they're getting fed up?

Nah - they made the mistake of walking along a road without a helmet on!

Sorry Fnaar, bubble wrap's not good enough. We need full sets of airbags mounted in a child's safety suit, set to go off with any impact.

Better still, under 16s shouldn't be allowed outdoors except when travelling in a 4WD SUV with bull bars, neither should they be allowed to take part in any activity where there's any possibility of an injury as serious as, or worse than, a slight scratch. Get real, this is the totally risk averse, cotton wool (or bubble) wrapped 21st century!

"What do you think are the three most important cycle safety measures?"

No option for 'Better driver education in awareness of vulnerable road users'.

To be fair to the IAM that is the sort of message they constantly put out to their members. But when advising on road safety their stance is pro-active, it is no use whinging about what someone else does, when you are on the road your safety is in your own hands, be you on two wheels or four.

Their magazine does have a cycling section and many members are themselves active cyclists.

I would say that but I'm one of the countless millions of children who died horribly when they crashed their bikes in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s before the world's nannies started wailing about helmets. They were truly awful times, the streets were littered with children's' corpses. And all because no-one had invented the cycle helmet.

It occurred to me that wearing a helmet is a bit like that old joke about a drunk looking his wallet under a streetlight instead of in the dark alley where he dropped it? Why? “Because the light’s better here.”

A helmet is doing something, even if it's not addressing the real risks (ie bad car drivers).

Hit the nail on the head!

Successive governments of all colours have concentrated on appearing to do something rather than actually doing something. And if whilst appearing to do something, minorities such as cyclists are inconvenienced/put to expense then so be it. What price votes?

(Sorry, this is sounding like it should be in P&L).

I put my three "measures" in the 'other options' box
Stricter liability in the UK
Cycle awareness training for drivers.
Lower speed limits on rural roads.

Number plates and average speed cameras, limiting the speed to 20mph unless on a dual carriageway. Obviously most off roaders couldn't average that, so would be subject to heavy goods vehicle laws and 15mph.
