I see the poll manages to ask twice if we think helmets should be compulsory for children. I'm not sure whether one should read anything in to that.

Personally, I think helmets should be compulsory for children - thinking back to how I behaved on a bicycle when I was a child I would imagine my parents would have insisted on it if such things were available back then (and if they had known what I was doing).

I'm a helmet wearing, and anti-compulsion.

Which kids are most likely to helmet-less even if there is a law of compulsory helmet wearing for children? It is the same group of children who are most at risk from road accidents that are least likely to wear a helmet if it was compulsory. Same as it is that same group of children who are least likely to be obeying the current seat-belt laws. And if you think that kids wear their helmets correctly go and have a look at your nearest school ... there will be plenty of badly adjusted helmets and half the time the straps will be undone or hanging from the handlebars.

I wear one, except when it's hot, to help stop Mrs Dc from worrying.

I'll wear one from choice when I see some rigorously conducted research showing any benefit from them. So far, as far as I'm aware, there is no evidence whatsoever to support helmet use.

I haven't cross checked it, but I have seen it suggested that even if helmets prevented 100% of injuries the reduction in cycling from compulsion would mean that overall the health and longevity benefit would be large and negative.

All of this ignores one important fact. Cycling is a very safe form of transport

If it's ever made compulsory count me in for the helmetless protest rides in Bristol and London, possibly Cardiff as well.

What worries me is if they made it compulsory what next, fluorescent jackets/tops, lights to be fitted at all times and working, weight limit no overloaded bikes, the list could be endless

As a youngster I bet myself and my peers did far more miles than kids of today without head injuries being an issue. No to any form of compulsion.

Given that you are still here to type this post I see you managed to "survive" despite not wearing a helmet as a kid.

I don't wear a helmet and let my kids decide whether they wear their helmets (bought by grand parents !!) or not.

I am pro choice.

Indeed, home made jumps over bits of ply board, down the side of the gravel pits with brakes that didn't work

those were the days

Although conversely, I took a header over my beloved Raleigh Striker, and the only effect was the loss of several teeth. Don't even know if helmets were available back then.

Ditto... and spectacularly dangerous jumps off home-made ramps, attempting to jump across rivers, numerous falls off during the process... sheesh, what do we want, a nation of soft-fleshed wimps?

I personally am not a fan of wearing a helmet and do believe it should be down to an individual's choice. But I am not 100% sure that the current design/material of a helmet is quite right, and don't ask me what "right" would be
