My late mother aged like a cat does - she looked pretty much the same age for decades, then aged more quickly towards the end.

In 1995 I had to move to Swindon and was house hunting. My mum came with me. The agents and sellers assumed we were a couple. I was 26 and she was 48.

Tbh, I am never really positively impressed by declarations of 'long marriages' unless I know the couple well enough to think that their marriage was/is a good one. Even then it is a tricky judgement call as you may never really know what goes on behind those marital walls.

Long does not necessarily equal great. And 'long' can mask a great deal of heartache, sadness, boredom and lack of real affection & respect, etc.

I have come across long marriages when one person has heartily glad when the other one died

They just stayed together because "that is what you do"

Other ones where everything was fine and they stayed together because that was what they wanted above all else

It depends - and sometimes only they really know

Mrs exlaser is four years younger than me . We met when she was 19 and we got married when she was 22.
36 years later we are still together. Probably because we have similar views on life and politics . Also even though we have a lot of shared hobbies and interests we give each other our own space.
Though I can very definitely say we are not one of those couples that say ‘ we have never had a crossed word ‘. 😂😂

That's interesting Mr 2 that you and your Missus have similar interests.

Me and Mrs D are polar opposites in character, and beyond family have zero shared interests.

Yet somehow it works. I'm a bit of a loner and Mrs D brings me out my shell a bit, Mrs D is like an Emu on acid and I keep her calmed down a bit and on the level. Somehow our rough edges just mesh together perfectly and it's a very warm and close relationship. In 20 years together and 17 years if marriage we've genuinely not had so much as a raised voice between us.

It's like I said to her - "you're a lucky lady - you married this body, you get to do what you want to it."
