Where is that, I had a college lecturer with that name (cabinet making), quite a famous fella as one of the BBC continuity/filler films from the early 50s called 'The Woodturner' was him as an 'Apprentice' and he was big mates (and collaborator) with Arthur Negus.

I think benches in wonderful spots, sometimes bizarre spots, and those with a commemorative plaque are Britain's gift to civilised life. May be mistaken but have the idea that it is a particularly British thing.
