Prior to the digging of the Channel Tunnel, attempts were made to build a bridge to France.

Unfortunately the builders had to wait so long for deliveries, they died before it was completed, but the family still managed to get paid, as they took officials to the works already done at Brighton, and said 'you can see France if you peer' which is how Brighton Pier got its name.
