Penny Farthings did not get their name due to the relative sizes of their wheels, a la the coins of that name.
The original was invented by Penelope McArmwrstler of Leeds in 1403 in order to speed her to the Peasant and Horsewhip in time for last orders, whereupon she would down 8 pints of Courage bitter and release the resulting flatulence during the ride home.
Thus this style of bicycle became known as the Penny Farting.
The resulting flatulence was why the 'Safety Bicycle' was invented.
The theory was that if you were going to follow through, at least it would be closer to the ground, therefore potentially causing less splatter/mess.
An unforseen consequence of this was that many pieces of verge, field or farmland beside roads or cycletracks became less fertile as a result, because of reduced 'spread'.
This is something which many local councils have only recently started to reverse through planting wild flower verges and 'rewilding'.
