Wetherspoons was founded by Michael Fish (no fish puns please - this is a serious thread).
Obviously, he was a weather man, but it is less widely known that he was adept at playing the spoons. Thus he named his new business venture, "There Will Be No Hurricane Weather Spoons", which was later shortened to Wetherspoons as the original name made the business cards rather large and ungainly.
