Hello all

Piers from Belfast here though my online name is Stiffpilchard (a tribute to Cliff Richard - I would probably rather listen to a stiff pilchard to be honest).

I am currently in my 5th week off work since being wiped out by a careless non-seeing driver while cycling to work on 22 July. My pride and joy, Trek Alpha Series 1000 has been written off, and although no bones were broken (incredibly), I am slowly mending. Extensive soft tissue damage in my shoulders and chest, concussion (and post concussion memory lapses) and problems with my left arm and wrist - all a barrel of laughs.
The police are considering prosecuting the driver for undue care and attention. he 3 witnesses have backed me to the hilt and to be fair the driver has held her hands up, admitted responsibility and said that she just did not see me.....or at least not until I had hit her car and flown over the roof and landed on my head and left shoulder. Considering I was probably doing close to 30 mph, I got off pretty lightly.

My cycling before then consisted of 7 daily miles to and from work and evening and weekend rides preparing for the Dublin-Belfast-Dublin Maracycle on 24/25 June - great fun and hopefully I will be mended and available for next years!.....on a new bike!

Hello!

London commuter cyclist here (brixton to kew). I also ride recreationally (day rides) and have made occasional touring trips (cycle-camping) to France. But i haven't done enough cycling this year so I'm not as fit as I used to be (sob!) - hope joining here will keep me motivated and enthusiastic for riding!

Hi,

Im newish to cycling (unless you count cycling to school 20 odd years ago!)

I started work in Nov with a charity WARWICKSHIRE AND NORTHAMPTONSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE.

I completed the 2010 and 2011 Londan marathons for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and never want to run again so need a new challenge!

My challenge now is to complete John OGroats to Lands end next August for the WN Air Ambulance, so i will be spending lots of time on here looking for help and advice. Im hoping I can get a bike through the bike to work to scheme (although reading the latest HMRC news im not sure its a great idea)

So thats about me - I look forwards to meeting you all.

Hi, I'm just taking up cycling. I used to run but had an accident and damaged my knees so now running is out. I was told to try cycling as it's not as high impact on my knees. So here I am!

Hello :-) I live near Beckenham and try to cycle into london bridge twice a week (well esp if the rain isn't there when I leave home!). I'd like to go out at weekends with a bunch and it was v welcoming & nice to see a couple of you riding into London from Bromley a few weeks back. I like tea and cake in any order....

All the best and see you on the road.

Hello Sunshine :sun:

There's a fair few from your neck of the woods, on here. You should think about going along to one of the Sunday London Rides. Have a look at the thread here.

Cheers,

Hi, all looking to step up the mark and improve this addictive sport, I'm currently up to about 80 to 100 miles aweek 50 of which I do Sunday mornings. Currently ride spez allez elite, my average speed around 16 to 17 mph. So tips on how to improve would be great. My rides are Chelmsford outright burnham and back

Hi all, I've made a few posts already around the site but thought I'd best say something here.

I'm originally from Doncaster, but spend lots of my time in Sheffield and Manchester. I'm 23 and have started seriously cycling 3 years ago when I decided that the occasional 5 mile mountain biking excursion would set me up nicely for a 1854 mile bike ride to Prague via a few countries... Turned out I was amazingly correct and refuse to give in on this great passtime. I'm still sticking with the original £45 eBay purchase bike of a Saracen Powertrax with fairly slick tyres on it. I regularly visit people around the country on it along with my ridiculously over-burdened panniers and am now on my 5th chain... I think I cycle wrong??

Anywho, anyone with a silly plan who can't seem to convince people that it is indeed a good idea to cycle somewhere; I'm most likely willing to join in!

Hello!! I am new to cycling, meaning I haven't ridden two wheels without a motor since 1986! Since then it has been Honda, Kawasaki or Suzuki (dirt and street). I am now to the point, rather my waist line is to the point that I need to do some form of exercise. My daughter is 11 and wants me to ride with her, what more incentive do I need!!

I have read through a few parts of the forums and I realize there are sections for what I am going to list next, but since I am introducing myself I might as well introduce my wants and desires too.

My daughter and I are looking to ride for enjoyment and exercise. Our terrain would be road, park, trail and some hilly areas. She can ride, but to be honest she has only had the privilege of a BSO. I am now in the market to purchase a new/used bike for her and myself. She is 11 years old and about 4'9" with a 29" inseam and I am old and about 5'8" with a 30" inseam. Doing some research it seems she falls into an XS (14") frame with 26" rims and I fall into a M(18") frame with 26" rims. Obviously I am open to suggestions and direction on this part. You guys are more equipped to answer the fitting questions. I want to put her on a cycle that will provider her the best opportunity to enjoy and grow with cycling. For myself, I want to be able to keep up. LOL. I have visited Moonglu in Ripon, North Yorkshire (my local) and gleaned a few of these figures while there. The suggestion for me was a GIANT Revel 1 and for my daughter was open to discussion due to a lack of smaller female bikes on hand.

Anyway, I have probably stretched my welcome into more of a enquiry. I am open to direction, suggestion and criticism... Feel free to drop me a message.

Cheers,
