Thanks. I just popped a post somewhere else but not sure where. Never mind. I'm a 47 year-old Australian, living in the Tropics in the amusingly-named Townsville. Americans find this hilarious; first, because it is, and second because it is the "fictional" name of the Powderpuff Girls' hometown. In that case, "the city=town, ville=town" redundancy pun is intended. Ha-ha. In our case, the founder of the town was Robert Towns. How could our founding fathers have predicted that such reverence wold result in such mirth.

Weather here is psychotically good 8-9 months of the year, and it is a fabulous place to cycle. The other 3-4 months are improbably hot and humid, but you get used to it...sort of.

I live near the sea, but behind me, smack in the middle of town is a 270M hill with a road! Castle Hill. No excuse for not doing your hill-training if you live in this part of town. There are also good, and relatively safe long rides in town, and as for all of Australia, some places that are a long way away but still have good roads.

I'm an enthusiastic amateur, and will never be anything more than a punter who loves to cycle for fun, fitness and a couple of distance events each year. My goal is to push myself sensibly and enjoy myself. These distance events are fund-raisers, between 240k and 360K, and they draw heavily on the cameraderie that cyclists can enjoy. Townsville has a very strong cycling community with entry points for all grades of rider.

Ii sound like a bloody travel agent!

Hi Cycle Chatters! I'm in Australia, Congratulations on your forum.

Hello and Welcome to the CycleChat forums each and every one of you.

Why don't you post a brief introduction to yourselves on the "Welcome Mat" that way it should attract more views - this part of the forum "make your first post here" is just generally to get your first post out of the way(as the title says).

Peter, there were quite a few Aussie's joined up a few months ago from British Victoria, I think - haven't seen any posts from them for a while though?

Good luck and enjoy your cycling. :becool:

Hi there and thanks. I'm not sure what British Victoria is (apart from perhaps, one of our more interesting "recent" Queens!) but there is a state of Australia called Victoria, which I'm sure you know. Its the Southeastern- most state and has Bass Strait to its South, then the "Island State" of Tasmania. Australians everywhere are cycle-mad, I think, because for the most part, our weather is just so conducive to doing stuff outside!

Hi - I'm a newbie to Road cycling and to forums!

I've had a mountain bike for a few years, and have decided that I now want to get a proper road bike, with drop handlebars.

I'm looking to do longer distances 3-4 hours and increase speed
I've been looking at a few makes and have found it quite difficult to find a decent ladies bike. This year many makes are sold out!

I've been looking at specialised Dolce Elite, or Trek Pilot 2.1 WSD, or a Kona Lisa - I'm short - 5'2" so need a 48cm size.

As a beginner I thought it would be better to get a triple chainset? and I thought if I could get a bit of carbon in the seatpost/forks that this would give me a more comfortable ride?

My budget is £1000 max.

Any further thoughts?

Thanks

Don't worry too much about it, Peter, Bauldie is from British Scotland and easily confused.

Greetings, forres.

I don't know much about those particular bikes, but I would trot out the well-worn "Have you tried riding them?" phrase. One of them will feel spot on for you, I'm sure, and there is only one way to find out which one that is.:becool:

I'd always try to get a triple, but then I'm massively unfit and appreciate the granny ring. I have carbon forks on my road bikes and I don't seem to have any problems with "buzz" when riding, although I don't have much to compare them with as my other bikes either have suspension or fat tyres.

Hello. Yet another BV forum member, from Down-Under popping over to say hello from sunny Oz. I've felt a guilty lurking around here for a few days, so I thought I'd come out of the shadows and say hi!

I'm Victor, and also from the BV forums in (mostly) sunny* Melbourne, Australia. If my job ever allows me, perhaps I'll pay London a visit one day (my stepbrother and his fiance live there), and try out the local cycling culture

Cheers,

--- Victor.

P.S. Here's a gratuitous link (I believe she's one of yours? :becool:):

Oh well, we kinda get used to all that. Being a former colony of yours, there are really only four ways to name a place in Australia:- 1) after the English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh guy who found it, with the lion's share going to the English, 2) by just copying a name from the UK without any regard for resemblance or relevance, 3) after a English Monarch 4) by clumsily translating Aboriginal names. How else would you get an Elizabeth street in Wangaratta? Or a Hyde Park in Townsville? See how easy it is?

I'm going to start calling Victoria "British Victoria" from now on, Melbourne being the Capital of that great cosmopolitan state. I imagine as many Melbournians will be chuffed as annoyed. We'll see.
