:welcome: well if you find yourself going backwards i would suggest you turn round and face the handle bars.

Enjoy the ride, get posting and ensure you spend plenty of time on the Show us your newbie progress thread. Really friendly bunch and you can ask anything as they will all help you or point you in the right direction and offer loads of support. Then if you fancy Tea or a bit of Mundane News you can meet some lovely people that will make you chuckle.
Finally if you think your music knowledge is any good check out The Chain. I like a challenge:ninja:

... My legs are much bigger and stronger than they were all those years ago, but they only seem effective in short bursts...
Jamie

I know what you mean, the vast majority of my cycling is short routes and as such I have powerful muscles but having cycled around 65mi this week, 30 of which in one go, I have discovered that my endurance lacking in comparison. Hopefully I'll make long rides a bit of a habit.

Hi ALL !!!
I'm Cathy and live way down in the South West in Plymouth.
If any 'Jacks' .... is that Welsh people? fancy getting fit for a good target and reason, I'm passing your way April-ish on my way through from LE to JoG's. I'm mixing camping with B&B's and pubs .. lots of lovely pubs :cheers:to get me through to the finish. I'm aiming for about 21 days or sooner.
I read Ellie Bennett's book, 'Mud, sweat and Gears'!! Check it out Guys!
My least day for miles will be about 28 - ish and my most will be around 70 ( up and around Preston ) to get to my sisters for a 2 night / 1 day rest.
The invite has handed out. I'll natter about this more, in due course.
Plus, selfishly ... local knowledge from any one who wants to met up, will be invaluable and probably very welcomed  and in much need.
Read the book Guys, I'm basing the 'whole pub crawl' on the that route .... with a slight change in and around Bristol and Preston / Blackpool.
Laterz!! :sun:

I'm in your camp my knees are shot I mainly swim for cardio I can't go heavy on squats either but lots of Brufen and I can get through a plyo class love the cycling though but my knees give out around he 40 mile mark (working on upping that though)

If you continue to have knee problems check your basic set up such as saddle height and knee position in relation to pedal spindle. If you use clip less pedals check they are not restricting your normal rotation. Finally avoid pushing too high a gear.. try a ride or two pedaling slightly quicker than normal but one or two gears lower.

Hello from Frankfurt am Main

I've been lurking for a while, taking advantage of some of the advice on here and finally decided I should sign up. I took up cycling two years ago to get fit, down from 234 to 188 lbs. Looking to loose some more and do my first imperial century.

Many thanks. My problem stems from years of delivering furniture jumping of the back of a 7 1/2 tonner with sofas etc. my back is really bad ( chronic degradation ) so I can't harm that any more but it really does hurt sometimes ( ESP as I have had a 6 week break from the gym). My knees though they can't find a thing wrong yet somedays I can't even get up a flight of stairs. I restrict my milage on the bike to how I feel on the day it seems to be the best compromise.
