Hello to you all . just got back on a bike after about 30 years and after giving up smoking too many fags. Have to admit am enjoying minute of it. So pretty much like all the people of my age spend a lot of time puffing and panting up hills and being overtaken by small children on BMX bikes .Oh and got that look from the wife of are you mad and how much !

Hello everyone.

My name is Jamie and I'm 30 years old. I first started cycling when I was about 13 and living in London. I was a member of Whitewebbs CC and raced regularly. Unfortunately I quit when I was about 18 due to personal reasons. I have always followed the sport over the years I have been off my bike, and over the last couple of years the success of British cycling has made me really miss the sport I once loved. Now settled in Devon I decided it was time to get back on my bike and pick up where I left off.

I've just bought a 'Specialized Sectuer Sport Triple' Road Bike and been on about 3 rides over the last week. Let's just say I'm not quite as quick as I used to be! Climbing used to be my forte, but I have spent the last 5 - 6 years body building and I now weigh just over 14 stone, so crawling to the top of the never ending hills here in Devon has been a physically and mentally straining reality check!

But I'm not giving up! I'm going to spend the rest of the summer, autumn and winter getting as many miles under my belt as possible in preparation for next season. Can anyone recommend a good cycling club near Torrington, Devon?

Happy Bank Holiday everyone.!!
Jamie_C !! Try a site called 'cyclestreet.com' ... or it could be 'streetcycle.com' it's a fantastic tool for routes, the right roads for you and a planned A to B course, with informative places to see on that route. I've got into this lovely site cos of my planned April LEJoG's epic - hopefully taking around 21 days or so - haeding up the West coast, mixing camping / B&B's and the odd pub along the route.
I'm not that confident on the computer thingie so I'm still learning all the time. But for now, I completed the journsy a couple of times, still sat on my sofa ... it's great !!:laugh:

Thank you all for the kind welcomes and information.

Welcome @Jamie_C, surely if you've been body building you've already got strong legs :P. I'm sure by the 4-5th ride you'll notice it getting easier.

My legs are much bigger and stronger than they were all those years ago, but they only seem effective in short bursts. I think I must be about 4 - 5 stone heavier than I was the last time I was on my bike so there's a lot of extra weight to carry. Like you said it should get easier after a few more rides.

Hello. Thought I'd sign up to this website because it's UK based and I wanted some help/advice on changing handlebars. I've posted a thread in the Know How section so if anybody feels they can shed some light then please check it out!
Thanks
