Drinking my coffee as I'm typing this :P and well, I could do with some techie advice, although it's probably simplest answers I need , need to get my brakes sharp and keep them sharp (only stay sharp for about 3 weeks and then they go incredibly dull) -Steve

Hi everyone and Hi to Shaun with thanks for setting up this forum.

i'm new to chat generally i guess - i'm recently looking at cycling sites with a view to do some touring. i've done some before B&B style thru France and Italy but i am thinking to do some rougher camping style tours. i'm no mechanic and that bit scares me, as too the going alone. i used to have a practical companion who for health reasons doesn't cycle now.

i live in geneva and cycle locally although i'm no alpine cyclist. i prefer following rivers. gentle journeys. i speak english french and german. i'm happy to meet anyone hitting geneva.

on 2 june i'm doing my first bike maintenance course - yikes ! hope the wheels stay on.

Steve, pop into the Know How forum and click the Post New Thread button (over on the right above the topic list) and then pop in a title along the lines of "My brakes go dull after a few weeks - how can I fix them so they stay sharp?" and explain the post what's happening and I'm sure the regulars will wade in with some good advice.

You'll get along just fine - it's dead easy to use and if you've got any questions just post a message in the support/feedback forum and someone (or me) will give you a helping hand.

Hi everyone, I'm Tom.

I'm a student in Durham at the moment, so I'm spending term time in the North East, and holidays in my home town of Edinburgh. I love riding (mainly road, but a bit of XC, and looking to start touring this summer), but don't have that many miles in the legs as yet. I'm here to try to absorb some of the wisdom - look forward to speaking to you all!

Hello - My name is Lauren and I want to take up long distance riding. I live in the pacific northwest where there are many individual and group riding opportunities. I have a Sedona DX Giant that I ride around town in and occasionally take on trips. It weighs about 30 lbs and is hard for me to get in and out of my Subaru.
A friend has a 2009 specialized Secteur Sport for sale. It has only been ridden 3 or 4 times and looks pretty close to new, a few minor scuffs, can be probably buffed out. I am going to take it in and have it checked out by the shop she purchased it from. A reputable shop I might add. I love the ride and feel of this bike but it is a bit intimidating with the handlebars, brakes and gear shifting which I am having trouble figuring out.
Before I go any further, I have to decide if her asking price is reasonable - she is asking $500.00, justifying it has hardly been used - despite being a 2009 model, she says it is only one year old because it was purchased new last year. It has a Profile Design Airstryke bar which I might have removed unless there is a recommendation not to. I believe she has some fancy pedals as well but for now has the standard ones. The frame measures 54cm x 54.8cm (top bar). I am 5'5" and weigh 35lbs.
I need some friendly neutral opinions on if this is a good buy for this year and model bike. I love the light weight. It is white and black.
I was not actively shopping for a bike like this, it just came along - and the sun has come out at the same time.
I am going to see her tomorrow and would like to have some insight.

Thanks

Hi :hello:
I'm Jo. I'm new to cycling - 3 weeks! Taken it up for leisure and fitness, as it would not really be practical for my work commute at the moment. Loving it already and try to get out whenever its dry! I've had back surgery so need to pace myself, but already finding that I am increasing the distances and I'm surprised at how quickly my fitness is improving. We've entered the Great Manchester Cycle (13 mile) on June 4th as a bit of a motivator to keep at it, although I'm finding it quite addictive already!
Hoping to find lots of useful tips on here!
Jo

Welcome to you both :welcome:

Lauren - I've got a Specialized Secteur. For the money it's a decent bike - and if it's hardly been used then $500 seems OK to me. But them I'm on this side of the pond.

Hi. I'm new here. How do I post something for sale. It says I'm not allowed. Thanks Kathy
+1 for DC's comments. Just get stuck into the forums and before you know it your post count will be up and you'll be able to advertise things for sale

There's all sorts of topics under discussion so you shouldn't have any trouble finding something that floats your boat ^_^

PS: I would avoid helmet debates though if I were you
