It is not dark here until nearly 6pm. ^_^

Technically it was the same here: sunset is at 17:47, of course that's a quarter to five in UK time.

Temperature hit 4 but the wind is bitter so feels a lot colder than yesterday. Extent of venturing out being to the paper recycling bin at lunchtime and to top up the bird feeder post WAH. Did that yesterday but the feathered ones have been at it all day presumably eating to keep warm.
Frustrating WAH afternoon trying to find some guidance. In one of 18 parts with no sensible numbering. Ending up copying the whole lot into Word and eventually found it was in the last part.

I survived my first day back in the office. My back is definitely a lot better. Oddly enough, my relatively cheap office chair at home is more comfortable than the posh ones at work.

I got home just in the nick of time as it was just starting to rain as I was unlocking the door and now it is absolutely torrential and quite stormy as well.

Boyracers are busy wasting petrol again. In amongst all the toy cars with big bore exhausts, there is someone with a V8 BMW which sounds very nice. It'll let the Corsa brigade hear what a proper engine sounds like.

It's been a brrrrrrrrrright and chhhhhhilllllllly day here chez Casa Reynard.

Slept surprisingly well which makes a nice change, but still working on a sleep deficit. Back is still stiff and foot is still sore, but since there's stuff that mum can't do, I gotta put my big girl pants on. Morning chores included emptying the the ashes from the grate, doing a load of laundry - but handwash, as some things needed soaking, scrubbing or were too delicate to consign to the machine.

Lovely luncheon of a ham and cave-aged cheddar sandwich, some fruit and a :cuppa:

Then I spent a bit of time splitting logs - which is surprisingly good exercise. None ended up on my foot today, thank goodness. Also topped up all the wood bins in the house. Thankfully tomorrow is the last day of this cold snap, but I will need to keep an eye on the forecast on account of my needing to finish cutting up that cherry tree at some point this week. The snowdrops and daffs are coming up everywhere in the wood, and I don't want to be squashing them with the mower & trailer.

After, popped into town to do a spot of grocery shopping - mainly for bits that I can't get in Tesco. First stop was the butcher. He didn't have any small packs of steak left, so I bought a tray with seven big fat venison sausages (made with wild, locally-sourced meat) instead. I also picked up some black pudding and a bag of beef bones. There's some nice meat left on the bones, so Madam Lexi will enjoy that, there's also a good bit of suet on there, which I shall keep for frying, and then the bones will be used to make a nice pot of beef stock.

Popped into Waitrose for a mosey, and to see if they had any free newspapers (they didn't). But got lucky on yellow sticker in there, finding four avocadoes, a pack of red pears, a Pont Leveque cheese, a tub of marinated anchovy fillets and some corned beef off the counter.

Last stop of the day was Aldi to re-stock on both chamomile and peppermint tea (they're 80p cheaper on a box of 40 tea bags than Tesco). OK, I do actually prefer the Tesco herbal teas, but they're not 80p better, and the Aldi ones are perfectly acceptable. Also picked up some nectarines, some leeks, a pot of chocolate spread, two packs of rice cakes and some chicken & onion flavour instant noodles (I know, but they're lovely!). I also ended up with an Aldi impulse buy...

No, not something from the middle aisles, but a kilogramme pack of smoked bacon for £4.49. Seems like a ridiculously good deal compared to Tesco, and it's worth a punt if nothing else. I'm not snobby when it comes to food, so we shall see. Yes, I do have bacon in the freezer, but it's the spendy dry-cured stuff that gets used for bacon sandwiches as it's far too good to cut up and put into things.

I also need to report that I am now down to the last £2 of the £200 for groceries and sundries that I withdrew from the bank at the beginning of January. So I've done quite well, bearing in mind that I have bought a load of marmalading / preserving supplies, as well as a lot of cheese, either on YS or on a really good clubcard offer.

Soup, sausage rolls and a :cuppa: for supper.

Now sat by the fire, trying to thaw out. It was just SO cold in town... :cold:

Looking for potential schools for Beautiful Daughter. We still have a three tier system in this state, with Gymnasium (Grammar school) Realschule (Secondary tech) and Werkrealschule (Secondary modern). All my lads graduated from Realschule, but Beautiful Daughter's grades mean she's been recommended for Gymnasium.

Once again I'm started by the amount of choice (small towns have two Gymnasium schools specialised in different things) and how small the schools are, about 800 pupils. Each school has a couple of main areas that is focuses on, on sciences or arts or language, but they all assume that everyone can speak German and English, and they offer a third language, in the case of science-based schools this is Latin, egads.

It's all a bit confusing but bearing in mind Beautiful Daughter can already speak and write fluently in English, German, and Japanese, I reckon she'll manage it...

Wonderful.
A skill set, sadly not so recognised or appreciated in the UK.
Jealous of the Japanese.
