Adding about two hours' labour to the cost of the motor, that is still less than a new machine. The Engineer may be able to purchase the motor more cheaply than I can.
The engineer should be able to get the motor a lot easier than you. But as @tyred said, it could just be the brushes. Cheaper still, if replaceable.

I've been trying to research mattresses as perhaps I might benefit from a firmer/better one but hard to know what I really need to look for.

I might ask the physioterrorist tomorrow to see what she recommends.

My usual physioterrorist has moved to Australia, so I will be seeing her replacement. Australia is a bit far to travel!
