I would expect a much stronger smell if is a dead rodent.

I think they are being particularly careful because they are trying to sell their house. A strange smell might put people off. I think it is just damp bricks and paving because that gap between the houses does not get any sun.

It would also depend what kind of waffles I'm making. Gaufre de Bruxelles, gaufre de Liege (the ones with the pearl sugar in) or gaufre de Namuur - these being my personal favourite, and that sits halfway between the first two in taste and texture.
