Probably, knowing my background, better to stand and fight than run away.

Americans don’t run from a fight

Grumblin at Garmin on the Granny Gear
A mild and grey day here chez Casa Reynard.

Did not sleep well as my right knee was really ouchie. Decided not to go yellow stickering in town, just as well on account of the Grand Prix start time being pushed forward.

I have done the grand sum of not a lot today, excepting putting the diced lamb and two thirds of the ham pieces I bought the other day into the freezer.

I entered a raffle last night. Ordinarily I don't, but this one is run by someone I know to raise money for a good cause, so I felt kind of obliged. All the prizes are motor racing based which is a plus, but given how appalling my luck in such tends to be, I'll either a) win nothing - the most likely or b) will end up with something I don't want / can't use. In the event of the latter, I can at least divert it to my bookseller friend and use it as a collateral for something that's of more interest.

At cat shows, if I enter a raffle, I usually end up with a) nothing or b) a bottle of booze. The latter of course being useless to me on account of my being teetotal.

I recall a raffle at school where my winnings, a bottle of fortified wine, was swiftly swapped for a bottle of orange juice xx( by the headmaster's wife. I was probably 12 at the time.

Today is Christmas Tree choosing day.
Cycle to the plantation.
Put our name on a tree then collect it, complete with roots, about 20th December.
Around New Year return it to be replanted to grow on for a few years.

The chap runs the plantation as a charity and supports smaller local charities.

So it begins, the tension mounts ......

When I was a kid we had the same tree for about 10 years, it used to get dug up from the garden on Christmas Eve eve* and then after 12th night sent back out into the cold for another year.

* we always decorated the tree on Christmas Eve whilst my Dad went out with Mums 2 brothers to collect the Christmas meat then off to the golf club where Dad would always say "I'm not having a drink this year" until about an hour later when my 2 Uncles would persuade him to have one which with them pair rapidly turned into several culminating in annual 'Dad in the kitchen chair wrapped in a blanket with a bucket to hand' Tradition that continued until the late 70's

Yesterday, I tried to do a bit of leaf blowing /hoovering (it will go in composting), but could I find the blower, nope. Came in, asked son if he'd seen it - leant it to friends so they could clean up an industrial unit - didn't think to bring it back. Grrrrr. Ended up doing it with a brush, which is a pita with my back.

Lots of people borrow things but never bother returning them. Lost lots of books I would now like to reread but now will never lend books. Some even claimed to own the book despite my name being written in the flyleaf.
I will lend some things but only to people I can get at easily to request or demand a return after a specified period of time.

Plumpers bill finally turned up for the radiator valve repair. Just glad it didn't need a new radiator.
Struggling suddenly with the medium rated Sudoku in Waitoses store newspaper. Stuck the originally supplied numbers in an on line solver and got told it was illegal with 11 possible solutions.

A damp day but very little wind so got out fora short walk as I suffer from cabin fever if indoors too long. I would prefer to cycle but too damp and at least one doctor thinks it is not wise while I wait for a new aortic valve.

Orkney have disposed of 6500 or thereabouts stoats so birds and small mammals native to the islands can flourish.
We do have a small number here but they do not seem to be a problem or the wildlifers would be after them. Mink have been virtually eradicated and they were a real menace.
The only fox seen was found dead by the roadside having been hit by a vehicle but my wildlife pal reckons it was killed on the mainland and left where he would be sure to find it to get him worried. His job was Chief Ranger and was responsible for deer control mainly but it did include all wildlife.

My white roses have started flowering again.
My wife wanted them on her grave but they would not be allowed and in any case the deer would have eaten them so I planted them near the house door instead.
