No, it wasn't a haematoma under the nail. I had one of those when I was a teenager. Blooming horrible. You deal with those by jamming a red hot needle through the nail to let the fluid out.

I'd also, as it turned out, broken the toe. X-ray of the foot revealed that damage.

Oh dear. As I've amply learned in the last six weeks, feet can be a bit of a nightmare when things go a bit wrong. We take them so much for granted.

A walk will do. I’ve gradually lost the enthusiasm for cycling outdoors anyway. The traffic is just getting heavier by the day around here.

I know how you feel. Traffic is becoming more of a problem and more aggressive here all the time too. The road outside my flat is used as a race track by the local boy racers.

It is grey and damp here although I can see a bit of a gap with blue showing through.

I don't feel too bad about being left behind when my friend upped the pace. For a while I kept with him but couldn't maintain it . He has a new Ribble bike and I had my 1990's Orbit Italia. He also goes out a lot on his bike whereas I'm a bit of a casual rider.

Must admit it was chilly when I was riding into the headwind but otherwise not too bad.

Agree re traffic and that's one reason why I go out early to try and avoid it.
