We bought two gold barbs last week, as we got a basic aquarium setup for our 9-year-olds birthday.

One of them died. Cause unknown.

No flowers, please.

An un-cycled tank and water?

nope - I have lived in some very remote parts of the UK where even a single motor vehicle is noticed....
But at 2am this morning, something doing hedge cutting on the railway was very noticeable, trust me!

I imagine it would be!

I have always wanted to live next to a railway line, albeit an interesting one, but still, not liking where you live sounds like heresy to me!l

Nope, the chemicals supplied with the tank had been put in, the pump had been running for four days before introduction, we'd been putting in Prime and Stability as per the prescribed instructions, feeding was all in order... Lulu (for that was her name) just went in her little ornamental tunnel and never re-emerged (until we tipped it up and she bobbed to the surface).

Her stablemate (Sophia Grace) is in rude health. Just one of those things I guess.

we are tenants and I am struggling too much with our existing home since my back went and I have been left partially paralysed. So we are looking to purchase our own home now we have saved up enough of a deposit plus some extra for repairs and we have found a house we like from the area and seeing it from the outside. We get to go around it tomorrow.

Good luck with it! :okay:

I haven't done it in a while, but 4 days was nowhere near enough, even when being propped up with chemicals - somethings like the natural bateria and so on just take time to develop gradually. I learned this the hard way, admittedly with goldfish as the Ammonia levels spiked, killing one of them.

I remember when we set up our 100 liter tank, we left it for at least 2 weeks.

Each fish is different. Small fish produce a lot less waste obviously, but even so, to me 4 days isn't enough.

We were told three days by the shop... The tank is 15l capacity, and I reckon there's only really 10 in there. That's why there's only two little gold barbs (well, one now, obviously)

Not trying to lecture you or anything like that, but as MDB says a couple of weeks is nearer the mark just to be safe. If you leave it that long you don't really need any additives, just a little drop of food each day is enough to get the filter going before adding any fish

Larger tanks are easier to keep in good condition as well. That's because anything wrong you do to it will affect a large volume of water a lot less than it will a small one.

Do you go to a little one man aquarists shop, or a Pets at Home style place?

You're lucky, I've got one like that a few miles down the road as well, he's always given me great advice.

Maybe the fish was a bit off colour when you got it and wasn't up to the move.

Pretty much their diagnosis. They're happy to replace, FOC. So, having told our littlest that "Lulu's on holiday", she'll be returning on Saturday.

Now watch the other one nip its fins off...

We live near a railway line... its behind the houses on the other side of the road..... mainly intercity things or small commuters.... but the odd steam train:okay: and in summer when windows open...you really notice the long rumbling frieght trains in the middle of the night:gun: hopefully moving in a month or two.....one of the houses we looked at had the same line as us at the bottom of a very short garden.....

The woman said don't worry you soon get used to the trains..... I said "don't worry we already are....." whilst thinking not flipping close to my house though:ohmy:.... we are hopefully buying one no where near a line...

@Dec66

I have never had any expeience of Golden Barbs though (mainly goldfish and small fish like Zebra Danioa and a Plec) so maybe they require/can endure different water conditions to what I am used to, but, still, 4 days??
