I don't know how insurance works in the UK but about a month after I bought a Fiji track bike and a brooks saddle for it I was hit by a driver who scraped the paint on the bike, scarred the saddle and cracked a couple of ribs. I called my insurance to ask how things worked (the driver was insured and they indicated a new saddle and a paint job on the bike was appropriate. His insurance had to cover my medical bills and replacement glasses since the ones in my back pack, although plastic lensed, were shattered. I also asked if there was payment for lost work and pain and suffering. Although my insurance was reluctant to say so, they indicated that around 8-9 thousand dollars was about what I could expect for the pain etc and when I asked for that the drivers insurance gave me that. I would have to wonder if things go that way in England. Perhaps it is worth looking into if you haven't already. I am glad your wife seems to be doing ok after what could have been a horrible outcome. Still, rib injuries really are very painful.

Thanks for all of your lovely messages.

She's come off remarkably well considering what she's been through. Very bruised ribs. A few scrapes. She went over the bonnet bashing her ribs on the bars on the way and then dumped in the road that the car was turning into. By the time her face hit the road she'd tumbled away most of the energy so a split lip and nowt else. The driver got out, took one look at her, got back in and drove away. A witness who works with him had to go and get him(!?). When I turned up he was telling her how traumatised he was by the event (?!) and how damaged his car was. He then explained to me that she'd been in his 'blindspot'. I pointed at the enormous painted silhouette of a bike and green tarmac that we were standing next to and that he'd taken her out because he'd driven across the bike lane without checking - he told me that there was no need to be nasty! He wants to be glad I'm a pacifist

Sue the c**t!

I hope Mrs M was wearing a helmet and flouro vest, otherwise the driver will try to claim it was her fault.
There is no legal requirement to wear either. There is one to drive exercising due care and attention.
