I absolutely despise the BBC. I watch the race highlights on CH4 so do a "Likely Lads" most Sundays - avoiding motor sports threads such as these, sports webpages, Reddit, 9Gag, Twitter etc but the BBC delight in announcing the winner as high up on their news website as possible, together with a "Live coverage" claim.

You don't have live coverage in any meaningful sense you bunch of faceslapped cuckolds. You lost TV rights to the coverage ages ago and virtually no one on the planet listens to an F1 race on the radio or follows text. Crowing the results is just spiteful spoilers for the majority who watch on rival channels.

No coincidence that now CH4 coverage has ended, the BBC article has dropped to the bottom of the page and leads with Hamilton being disqualified.

Oh ye of short memories...

When I first started following F1 in the early / mid 1980s, the BBC TV only showed the European races live, with all the others being relegated to a half hour highlights programme late in the evenings. I actually didn't have a TV when growing up, so either I had to go to a friend / neighbour etc to watch, or I listened on the radio. All the races were live on the radio, with Simon Taylor commentating.

I remember the big brouhaha back in 1986 when Mansell was leading the driver's championship coming into the last round in Australia (it was in Adelaide in those days), and the BBC decided to show the race live. IIRC it was only in 1991 that they went blanket coverage for every race. And you didn't get to watch the qualifying in those days either - except for the British GP.

TBH, I still prefer listening to the races on the radio and having the live timing on the laptop.

P.S. Blame Bernie for putting F1 TV coverage behind a paywall in order to fill his pockets.

Also the live races were often interrupted by horse racing.

Of all the things, this is the one you *can't* pin on him. Although it probably wouldn't hurt...

My tongue was firmly in my cheek.

As an aside...you like motorsport, you can sew...you must be fighting them off with a pointy stick!

I have three foils, two sabres and two epees if that's any use. Plus I can cook as well as strip & rebuild a chainsaw.

On a more serious note, Dan Zelos hasn't managed to put together a package to do the BTCC this year. No news yet on what he will be racing, but it won't be with Xcelerate (or however it is you spell that), as he has left the team.

The front page of the BBC website is always news and sport. With the main sporting event of the morning being the Chinese F1, why wouldn't they put it on the front page as lead sports story. As for F1 on the radio - it was on their main news and sports station 5Live rather than being relegated to 5live Sports Extra or the website (as seems to be the norm) and I had it on for the drive to Donington Park this morning and was glad of the coverage.

Be very interesting to see if Norris will qualify ahead of Piastri in Japan. I see emotional vulnerability in Norris that Piastri is'nt plagued with and this could be of the greatest significance in the long run . Immediately after the race old USa Zac embraces Piastri and then turns to Norris and offers a polite handshake . Norris will have to man up in a fortnight or he will have some sleepless nights . You lose the race as much in your head as on the racetrack.

Not sure I've ever used quite such strong language, but I do sympathise!
(for me the pain was never their website, but the radio news bulletins - am I supposed to also boycott all their music stations for a day?!? )

I've long whinged about spoilers, and on forums I normally get short shrift so I (mostly) gave up! But I'll add this:
what IS the point in giving out random sports scores on radio news? Let's consider the audience:
- The majority of Radio4 listeners don't give a monkey's about Formula1. I'd say that outside footy, all modern sport is a minority interest (also perhaps Wimbledon finals, The Boat Race and Olympic Finals).
- Sports Fans. Let's take footy fans (as the largest group); just how many modern fans will not get their team's result via some other channel well before BBC Radio?? (They even have a 24x7 sports radio station to cover such things!)

So who are these factoids actually for?
(likewise, why do people tweet bike race results? I can just google the result of any race I'm vaguely interested in. Or go to a cycling site. Rhetorical question: it's just attention-seeking and/or click-bait, depending on the writer ... )
