Since wheel tethers became mandatory, those kinds of incidents are far less frequent than they were. Look at any of the "Motorsport Mayhem" videos from the late 80s / early-to-mid 90s and there's plenty of them in there.

But at the angle at which Kirkwood hit the back of Rosenquist's McLaren, a wire cable wheel tether wouldn't have stood a chance, not at a relative velocity of around 160 mph, there or thereabouts. It's the hub itself that shatters in the impact.

Holy crap !!!!
I think I said something a bit stronger when I saw that last night - we've got so used to the wheels being retained by the tethers in accidents.

The BBC are at it again:-

Max Verstappen tops both Friday practice sessions

Yay! Max won the practice sessions where no-one except Red Bull was really doing qually runs and there is no way to compare the car setups as they all likely have different fuel loads and engine modes from what they will be running on the day.

God knows why they persist in trying to portray practices sessions as some sort of race.

In the mean time, Ash Sutton is on pole at Thruxton, with Josh Cook and Ting next. Dan Cam only 9th, but still ahead of the other NAPA cars of Robo and Osbourne. Andrew Watson also back at the sharp end of the BTCC grid.

Looking good.

And I think there was a Formula E race in Jakarta earlier today, so off to grab that on catch-up.

Well I enjoyed that race!
Good to see Mercedes back in the fight and the British flag on two podiums. Red Bull are still in their own race, but to be fair, it does seem to show that the car suits Max and his skills much more than those of Perez. Max may be going down the road half a second a lap faster than everyone else, but it can't *just* be the car.
Shame Norris got clobbered but them's the breaks. I'm surprised Aston weren't stronger...

Never mind the F1, the BTCC meeting from Thruxton was mega, especially the Mini Se7ens and Mini Miglias.
Amazing weren't they, they almost upstaged the BTCC crew, as they commentated maybe they should use BTCC as a feeder series, still have issues with Paul O'Neill no idea way he just grates me.

Think it's quite funny how they think it's all over & Sutton has won, but I don't think it is, they came out with a highly developed car, not sure there's much development left where the others are moving forward.

Been watching them on and off for years. Always brings a smile to my face.

Thruxton is an odd duck though, and very much a FWD circuit - always has been. Just need to look at Josh Cook, who's been largely nowhere so far this season, yet bagged a brace of podiums yesterday.

Next stop is Oulton, which tends to favour the RWD cars. So we shall see. Ash will be hard to stop, but this is the BTCC and anything can happen. And invariably does.

He will, but Ingram is not 'that' far behind, Sutton only has to pick up a DNF by puncture, shunt, mechanical failure & he'll be back with him. He only has to get a dose of Cammish luck & he could be scuppered.

Yup, as long as Ting keeps getting those "pointsy" days. The last two meetings have been pretty clean in terms of incidents, so we're due a bit of a crash-fest at some point.

And am wondering if Dan Cam has broken a mirror somewhere...
