If Red Bull are still way ahead of the rest of the field then surely it sends a message to the rest of the teams to break the rules as any gains outweigh any penalties?
Not at all undermined byRed Bull's Max Verstappen set the pace on the first day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain.
The world champion, top of the timesheets for most of the day, ended it 0.029 seconds quicker than Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc were third and fourth fastest, ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
Williams' Alex Albon was seventh, ahead of Alfa Romeo's Zhou Guanyu.
Pre-season testing lap times are notoriously poor indicators of form for the year ahead because teams do not reveal the specification in which they run their cars and fuel loads, engine modes and other factors can have a dramatic effect on performance.
The F1 cars had their shakedown and although we have fastest lap times they don't tell us anything at all. Red Bull put in a grandstanding performance to show just how big Max's genitals are whilst the other teams actually shared time between drivers and focused on learning about their cars and planning their setups.

They might as well have led with:-
Poor journalism but the Red Bull was brilliant all day , the class of the field.
Although you might expect that as it's just an evolved version of last years car which worked well. Other teams have had to do significant redesign.
How so?…the FIA have given Red Bull a huge advantage with their rule changes .
Well we will see how the cars perform today but from what I've seen on the net it looks like the FIA have given Red Bull a huge advantage with their rule changes .
The way I see it is that closer racing will only come about if Red Bull ease up on the throttle!
How so?
Alonso was fastest in the Aston Martin in free practise two and was ahead of perez in free practice one, if they can carry that form into qualifying it could get interesting.

But can they carry it all the way through the race, I hope they can, but feel he maybe up the pointy end at the start but will slip back

All of the teams worked on and agreed the rule changes. To be fair to Red Bull they got a good team together and also got a bit of luck in that their design worked best out of all the teams. Mercedes gambled and lost. The RB is looking good at at the moment but we don't know how much of that is grandstanding. We also know that because they cheated, they have a lot less R&D time this year, so whilst they might be strong now, their car may be affected as we go through the year and other teams bring on their upgrades.Well we will see how the cars perform today but from what I've seen on the net it looks like the FIA have given Red Bull a huge advantage with their rule changes .
