Nephew has a Sym he knows nothing about bikes but has been on the road with it for the past 15 or so months. He's fallen off it twice no major damage to either rider or bike. Only problem he's had was the rear brake he allowed it to seize up & it failed the MOT because of it. But it was nothing that a big hammer & some ignorance didn't fix. Parts were really cheap

I'm after a bit of advise please. My partner's son has just got a job/apprenticeship in catering and wants/needs a moped fairly soon. I've had plenty of bikes in the past but never a scooter/moped. I'm on the look out for one, and I've figured a 4 stroke would be better as less noisy, doesn't require top end rebuilds etc. Is this true? His budget is as little as possible, I've seen a few good ones for £850 but they seem to be holding their value very well and there's not many about. It's either that or buy a new one (like a SYM or Lexmoto or something) for around £1500 but that seems an awful lot to me, for a 50 that he will probably discard as soon as he's old enough for a car or 125.

Thoughts welcome, apart from "cycle", because it's much too far and hilly and time-dependant on other things.

Thanks

Like most aspects of used vehicles at the moment, prices are mad. My advice would be to find a one owner, low mileage cared for one or buy new. Two/three/four owners in and they've usually been left out in the rain, scraped against concrete walls, dropped, stolen and 'repaired' by clueless people who think wood screws fix everything.

Found one of these at the back of the garage yesterday 🙄 Unhooked it off the C-Tek battery tender, fired it up for the first time this year; and booked it in for MOT next week.

Determined to use it a bit more this Sumner……

Fighting the urge not to buy a second hand Bonneville, such lovely looking things.

Meanwhile, two or three have departed my collection so another one has joined...

Suspect compression (lack of it) issues, so will take it to a local place and see what they say. As 125s go, these are quite eye catching, imho.

Nice ! Repsol reps have always been lookers. Never really date too much either of course…

What’s the plan ? Just a project to amuse yourself with, a keeper for the fleet, one to get going and sell on or ?

Cheers.

I'll see what the garage say, sort of thinking it might need a new motor, but maybe a re-bore or replacement top end might do it. Probably not going to be a keeper, but if it does get fixed I'll certainly whang round on it for a short while. A couple of people have asked if it can be bought 'as is' so might see what happens with that.

Gone are the old days of blowing a hole in top of the piston, undoing about 6 bolts, 2 carb, 4 head, lifting the barrel, pulling the gudgeon pin, putting a new piston on, then reverse & keep riding.

Been a bit busy recently, three or four have departed, three or four have come in.

First off, is the GSX250. Never a huge 4 stroke back in the day, but when a lad I worked with at the time bought a brand new (red) one of these, I thought it looked great. This is a bit of a 'ten footer' but with some work I'm hoping it'll be a useable ride, for the occasional commute and gentle ride out somewhere...

Next up (yesterday) I 'accidentally' ended up with 2.5 Kawasaki Z200s. One memory I have of these (bizzarely) is a mate around 1981 having one and very nearly breaking his leg kicking it over. Iirc, he ended up going to hospital with a fracture or something. He swore the bike was possessed and scrapped it.

Now it's time to play Tetris at my storage place, as I honestly don't think I have room for them.

@Cavalol brings back memories for me. I had a Z200 in 1978, my first proper bike, a lovely sky blue colour. Unfortunately I had the bright idea of putting SAE30 oil in it (I think it should have been 10/40) and the engine rattled like a can after 15000 miles. I presume it was the camshaft bearings which had gone. I took it to a shop with the intention of trading it in and the shop owner said he'd only take the bike to show his staff what not to accept as a trade in!

I had a well worn RD250 & the mate bought a new GSX250 (1978ish) which if he got in my slipstream I couldn't shake off, remember one night, both 2 up heading into a strong South wind, where we were slipstream overtaking each other along a 7 mile strength of road, throttle pinned back on the stop, until mine melted the spark plug & the top of the piston, still managed to ride it home.

my pals took the mickey out of my top box, I don’t care it beats having to walk around holding a helmet!
