All my bikes were with me when I got the other half. Since then, I've built a bike for her out of a frame I found in a bin, then told her she needed something a bit better, with the result that she bought a Dawes Galaxy. I also told her she needed to keep the old one as a hack bike. Now I can simply say "well, you're just as bad" if she gives me any grief about having too many bikes.

To go from one to two can be easily explained by the need for a back up bike when the first bike goes wrong (puncture etc0, or those occasions when you wouldn't leave the expensive bike locked up somewhere - after all she wouldn't want that one stolen would she. (This argument probably gets harder to justify after 2).

I keep trying to get Mr Summerdays to move upto 2 ... (would make it easier to justify my next purchase), but he is rather more sensible than me and has spotted the flaw in my argument in that we can't store any more bikes.

On-road, off-road, fixie - who could object?

From personal experience, it only really starts getting sticky after five or so, but by then the average missus's counting system becomes a bit like those primitive tribes' ones you sometimes hear about - you know: one, two, many. The last one I bought I really couldn't think of a good excuse, so I just snuck it in and stuck it in the back garden under the bag with the others, thinking 'well, if and when she notices it, I can always say 'well it's been there seven weeks and you've only just spotted it, so it can't be causing you that much grief'.' I don't think she's noticed it yet...

An easy way to do it is to buy a couple and thereafter build your own. Get the bits deilvered to work, smuggle them down to the shed/garage and the collection slowly grows without anyone else figuring out what's going on.

Or so I'm told - I wouldn't know though....cough!

You might have heard about it from me. The technique works even better when the bikes are all the same colour. A back up coping strategy is seeking for forgiveness rather than permission - the pain duration is much shorter ;)

Easy one this -
=1 wet bike
=2 dry bike
=3 winter hack
problem solved:biggrin:
I'm still working on the winter hack..

Mountain bike
Audax bike
Vintage replica bike
Hybrid hack bike
Hybrid touring bike

I had at one stage considered basing my bike collection upon having no two bikes with the same gear change mechanisms for derailleurs:

Flat bar thumb change
Flat bar trigger shifters
Flat bar twist grip
Drop bar bar end
Drop bar STI
Drop bar downtube shifters

Nearly did it too....

say that it is really special and you can only use the old one for certain events (a bit of lying going on) then buy it whether they like it or not.

I got it at less than half price, was a bargain too good to miss. Of course the "half price" that i say i paid is really less than quarter of what i actually paid
