Nicholas Cage absolutely killed Captain Corelli's Mandolin, a good book that should have enabled a good movie. Sean Connery made a wonderful (ageing) Robin Hood in Robin & Marion.

I remember years ago watching 'The Generation Game' where the contestant couples had to match leading men and women against the films they starred in. One couple were completely hopeless and managed to pair up 'Gunfight at the OK Coral' with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. Mum and I rocked with laughter. I forget who they placed in 'Brief Encounter' - probably Laurel and Hardy.

I always remember the overall description of 'Brief Encounter' in I'm Sorry I haven't a clue. It wasn't amazingly funny, but it still made me smile:

'Oh! I've got something in my eye!'

'Here, let me help you get it out'

'I think I love you'

'Me too'

'I'm married'

'Me too'

'Oh bugger'

'Goodbye forever then'

'Goodbye'.

Sean Connery playing an Englishman in Robin Hood Prince of thieves

I dunno. I think he looked perfect for the role, and as his lines were minimal, the accent didn't really matter.

At the other end of the film, Marion's brother asks Robin to tell her that he died "a trueborn Englishman", in a broad Dublin accent - I knew the actor who played the part, and he laughed about it.

Spoilt the film, and made it! We first saw it in a packed cinema and when Wee Sean McConnery appeared more than half the audience broke out laughing! I nearly wet myself laughing, knowing his views about the hated English.

He was rather wooden when he was in The Bowler and the Bunnet playing a shipyard worker.
Oddly he was a shipyard worker at the time.

Tom Cruise puts me off whatever film he is in. Short arse smart arse.

Always amuses as love interest is usually Cameron Dias or Ncole Kidman who are both a fair bit taller than him. Any scene with both in is then dictated by camera angles and standing on a box so as to not show him as shorter.

I vaguely watched one the other night. It featured Gerard Butler being knocked about by a psychotic Pierce Brosnan.

Now.

King Leonidas getting thumped by Remington Steele?
