Does this also work for closing the things?
There is another model for closing the link, but a bit of weight on the cranks with the bike braked has never failed yet. BTW, some KMC links open easily with your fingers, and some identical ones don't. It really isn't just down to technique and skill. I have a pair of KMC remover pliers.

I bought a pair in the end, I was showed how to do it using a pipe wrench in my LBS and it was easy to do, sometimes though they would not come apart for love or money. Sometimes I could take them apart in seconds with just my fingers, but the final straw was the day I took the link apart with just my fingers in no time, thought to myself that was easy, so I reconnected it to try it again and after 10 minutes I was still struggling to part it, even with a plumbers wrench, so I bought a set of KMC pliers and never looked back.

I take chains apart regularly and would not be without my chain pliers. Sometimes chains come apart easily without them - but sometimes they don't. I was prompted to buy a pair after spending about 20 minutes trying to separate a "quick link" - in the end I had to resort to breaking the chain elsewhere using a chain tool. Mind you, anyone wanting to save a few pounds can easily make their own using a £1 pair of pliers from a poundshop and an angle grinder.

To make the job easier it's a bit of a no brainer for £8.00.
Expletive deleted.....We buy bikes costing £00's and there's a debate about an £8 tool which totally removes all the hassle of splitting a quick link, and keeps your hands clean. Fine, if your chain undoes with minimal effort, but in all other cases use the tools for the job and enjoy the application of the tool for the job. I bought one recently and am kicking myself over the grief not having one has given me over the past 5 years.

I'll get me coat before I get ripped to bits.....

+1, I bought mine about four months ago on a cheap deal and only just used them today. They are my new favourite tool.

Plus the little engraved bit on them that said 'open' in case you are a berk and cant chose the right plier for the job properly cheered me up.

I think there's some kind of intrinsic pleasure derived from using an extremely specific tool that just does one job really well.

Like, er this sort of thing, then? The thing that you don't need to use so often if you have... quick links.
