The price was £35. The 'average' was implying it was not a high end part, nor a cheapo thing either. I bought it about 2-3 weeks ago. I agree it is a bit unusual and not something I've seen before with half decent stems but I've seen it on BSOs quite a bit. I sent it to them for either a refund or exchange but it looks like they are sending it back to me!

If they send it back you'll have a chance of providing photographic evidence of the fault.

@e-rider I understood right away.
It's a defective item, you should be entitled to a replacement or a refund.
If it's coming back to you, refit it, take pictures.
If they still have it, maybe ask the seller to fit this stem to one of their bikes in order top fully understand the problem.

I already told them to fit it to some handlebars and they would see the problem - they don't seem to be interested in doing that. The main mistake I have made in this sorry situation is not taking a photograph before taking it all apart and sending it back. I have written off the £35 now. In future, the lessons to learn are to take photographs, and to keep all packaging and if possible return item as unwanted rather than faulty, although this will just pass the problem on to the next person.

yes, but then sending it back again and I've pretty much spent 35% of the value of the item in shipping costs, not to mention endless emails and the stress of dealing with such a useless company. They have lost my business, the stem brand has also lost me. I lost £35 (over £40 with shipping fees). I'm done with it now.

I will share the stem brand and online seller once they have had a good chance to fix this.

so without hassling them further, I just received an email saying the item was passed to a mechanic who has tested the stem and determined that it's a warranty claim, and they have processed a full refund. Maybe they read cyclechat?

yeah slightly reluctant to share on a public forum despite reporting the facts as accurately as possible as I'm no legal expert and don't really want either party taking me to court for whatever reason. They have now sorted this too, although that came as a surprise - I'd given up seeing that money again. The keys points are when ordering online, fully check parts as soon as possible, and not just a visual inspection, take photographs (very important) and keep all retail packaging until you know the product is 100% okay. Tbh, not sure I will shop there again or buy this brand again but maybe in time...
