I'm fairly sure the ghetto in the Elvis song wasn't the Jewish one, and I bet more people know that than the WW2 reference.

I certainly saw the gateau joke as harmless wordplay, rather than antisemitism.
Then again, maybe that's because I think of 'the ghetto' as somewhere that rich black guys rap about, before they go home to mansions with golf courses on the roof.

Well, that's as maybe. And I most certainly do not! I've usually passed lightly over sexist and other unacceptable stuff that's cropped up on here - see what the consensus is.

But when I get a sniff of antisemitism - if one accepts the allusion 'gateau' -> 'ghetto' - and thinking what 'ghetto' meant in the 1940s - then I protest. And I'm sorry to find the Admin - whom I usually totally support - getting involved. Let him answer, anyway.

I usually laugh at the 'joke' threads on CC. This time, however, ...

Err... Pete - I thought you had to be joking too - you are way off base here. The 'ghetto' does not just relate to jews, you know, although that is indeed where it started (as in the 'Ghetto Nuovo' of Venice in the late C15th, as it happens). It is most commonly used these days to refer to predominantly black and poor neighbourhoods in the USA, and has acquired a more general usage in reference to any marginalised place. It is also frequently referenced in humour, Jewish, Afro-American and beyond.

The joke in the OP was weak BTW. I expect that is why it wasn't found very funny. That and the way he tells 'em.

Whoa, Pete, take a step back there ... definitely no antisematism (spelling?) intended. It's harmless wordplay that I got in a text from my neice and thought might make a few people laugh.

Humour is a funny thing isn't it ... <- see what I did there ... pass me the mike, I'm on a roll ...

Cheers,
Shaun

Seems I'm way outnumbered here. I'll let it pass: if no-one else is bothered (and considering I never really took to Elvis!), let's drop it OK?

But I'm probably another one who didn't get the OP joke. If it is a joke....

I can certainly agree with you there, 661.

Now as you know i retired four years back .Well money has been a little tight .So these last six months i have tried to start up on my own .

Will little success,my first attempt i bought a paper shop -it blew away.

Second attempt i bought into a craft shop selling origami -well that folded .

So finally i started to sell on line nappies -the bottom fell out of that .

I gave it one more go selling mushrooms with a chap .Well he seemed to be a fun guy to be with .
