If convalescing is following a physical ailment, don't rush back to major exercise. At your our my age one** has to be very careful - slow and steady, adding 10% per week ... :okay:
Not a physical ailment, no  I haven't felt like it since the jaw incident. I know that once I'm actually on it I'll really enjoy it, but a wave of apathy washes over me when I think about getting on the bike, or going for a hike or anything.

**I fully appreciate that you are but a wean but just sayin' ....
I wish!

I'm just home from an overnight stay in Glasgow, I was shocked:eek: and disappointed, the city is almost a cycle free zone!!!
Of course my survey would not stand up to scientific scrutiny, but I did spend several hours tramping the streets and found the fingers of one hand were adequate to count cyclists seen per hour:sad::sad:.

The weegie members on this forum make up a significant portion of the brave few who cycle in Glasgow.
I blame the climate in the west, it's not exactly encouraging for those thinking about taking up cycling!

They're not joking when they say it's a car-sick city.
Obviously you don't state where in the city you stayed, but there are very few facilities adequate for the needs of non-vehicular cyclists.
And, as @Brandane said, the climate makes for grim riding at times :okay::rain:

Obviously you don't state where in the city you stayed,
I travelled by rail, arriving and departing from Queen Street Station, stayed overnight very close to Central station and walked towards the west end of St Vincent Street, so all very central, and the weather was dry throughout:smile:. I saw lots of office workers on their way home around 16.00-18.00, but not a cyclist among them:sad:.
I don't think I saw any infrastructure that might have encouraged cycling:sad:.

There is some, but you need to know where to find it! The Broomielaw is quite good for cycling, and there are paths and lanes which take you from there out by Partick, Clydebank, and onwards to Loch Lomond.
There is also a Sustrans route which I use quite often; takes you from the Broomielaw over the "squinty" bridge through Govan and Pollok park, then Paisley. From there you can head for Greenock on old railway paths, or south to Lochwinnoch and deepest Ayrshire.

As for Glasgow city centre itself, there are a few cycle routes which are handy once you know your way around.
It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation in Glasgow though. Do you spend a fortune on cycling facilities and hope that it encourages people to use bikes? Or do you judge bike use on current numbers and consider it to be a waste of time? After all, there ARE bike facilities in the form of roads, and not a lot of people are cycling on them.

Personally I think cycling facilities in Glasgow would be a white elephant. It's not bad as it stands (Glasgow traffic is a picnic compared to some of those big English cities ^_^), and yet as you noticed - very few cycle.
