What's new? We are lucky if there are lights on some "cycling facilities".
The riverside path from the Riverboat Casino to the Secc is a hazard for pedestrians too when there's ice.
The longer I live in this country the more convinced I become that there is less reason to stay in this country.
In addition to how really dreadful the infrastructure can be, matter-of-factly stating "Designated cycle routes are not routinely gritted" as if that isn't an utterly shameful thing to admit really rips my knitting:angry:

Shields Road is one of the main routes from the south of the city to the west end FFS!

Please don't start me; having just returned from service-centric Florida.
I knew I was back in Scotland yesterday within 15 minutes of landing. Weather aside, the reasons were:

  • The bus driver from the airport to Paisley Gilmour Street couldn't have been less helpful if he had tried, with a foreign gentleman who had clearly just arrived and who needed some help to get to Gilmour Street station. Myself and another passenger ended up assisting him. Compare that to Florida where every person I came in contact with was helpful, friendly, and courteous (well, apart from 2 planks in a car who decide I was a mother f***er pussy because I was on a buy-sickle).
  • On the train from Paisley to Largs, a fellow passenger about half a carriage away was loudly making clear his dislike of those who were of the Roman Catholic religion. In his defence he clearly had mental health problems, but pre austerity he would probably have been in the care of someone.
On the plus side, there haven't been any fatal shootings on the local news today. Couldn't help but notice the number of shootings on the news over there. Last weekend alone 2 dead in an Orlando nightclub, 2 dead and 7 injured in a Tampa nightclub, and 1 dead in a supermarket car park in Orlando.

Glad you made it back safe and dry, @Brandane ! :okay:

It's one of those interesting things about USA Florida. Time I was there, I wasn't too impressed but managed to catch myself from saying things like "Didn't like the States much". Florida alone is something like 3 x the size of the whole UK  and we would never let an American get away with "Been to [name a town in, say, England] - didn't like Great Britain".
'Did you go to Scotland ? The Highlands ? The North East ? Hebrides ? How can you say you don't like the UK when you've only been .... !'

Yes; I must refrain from judging England based on visits to London. It does get nicer the closer you get to Scotland.

I had a very similar experience on the train from Prestwick to Glasgow. A very nice Tinerfeño gentleman who was on the same flight as me sat down on the train next to two guys who were soon to be revealed as drunken fans of a certain association football team. They found it so very hilarious that a guy who had just arrived in Scotland for the first time didn't want to engage them in stupid talk about "The Mighty Glasgow Rangers", and abused him, made out that he was an illegal immigrant and were entirely obnoxious for the entire train journey.

I tried to help him and warn him to get away from them but my very limited Spanish wasn't any use .
In the end he fled, unfortunately he didn't know how the carriage doors worked and bumped face-first into them (which the neds found hilarious because they were degenerate c***wombles).

I made sure to catch up with him after the train arrived and apologise for aficionados al fútbol peligrosas idiotas and my inability to provide help on the train. I made sure he was ok and that he knew where he was going, but his memory of Scotland will be forever tainted by two absolute f***nuggets.

After all the random kindnesses and friendliness I encountered in Spain, it really put me on a downer. :gun:

Yeah, they sure love their guns over there in the land of the free. Maybe that's why everyone is so polite

Got 1 mile from my house on the hybrid this morning and the front tyre went flat, managed to get home but was too late to swap bikes and take the roadie instead so I had to drive again  cycling this year has just not happened for me so far

Likewise. Every time I plan to ride the instant gratification monkey pops up and says "you don't really want to ride, it's cold, you're unfit, remember what happened last year"

Getting over that hump will be tricky but it's all about inertia

I was thinking "man it's bloody windy today, typical the one day I choose to ride" then I thought "seems to be even harder" which then made me realise my front tyre was on it's way down. Lucky it never happened further down the road as I would either have to change it roadside or walk the rest of the way to work
