Cycling is fun ...

:snowball::snowball::snowball:followed by :rain::rain::rain: on the way home for me, after a very pleasant morning commute...
There was gridlock for the four-wheeled vehicles on lots of Midlothian roads, probably 5 cm snow and cars sliding all over the place on any slight hills and getting stuck. The separate cycle lane near work was full of fresh clean snow, felt very smug with my ice tyres , perfect traction on a wee steep-ish slope. The snow was turning to slush near IKEA, and from the beyond the Bypass it was 'just' heavy rain and rivers on the roads... The only problem was my glasses steaming up in go-slow mode . I have to say that my new Endura 'Deluge' gloves are pretty good, completely dry hands again, same as on a recent very wet commute...

, then came out to a few spits of rain. Within 10 minutes it was on for the day type rain, and getting quite heavy. Over the river on the wee ferry at Yoker then, and beat a hasty retreat to Paisley for a train home . 35 miles done, so not even close. Bolloxy bliddy weather :cursing:.
Did you ever consider taking up the diving Brandane? I know a few fairweather cyclists around here took up diving when they discovered they'd only get their hands wet no matter how heavy the rain. The added bonus of the odd clam or spoot for tea as well, beats roadkill any day:okay:.

Lovely weather, my favourite time of the year. Had the opposite, rained on leaving work and lying snow at home. Was so nice this morning I was still in shorts so was a wee bit chilly on the way home.

I assume everyone knows that the Forth Road Bridge will be closed until the New Year? Closed to cyclists and pedestrians too
Should produce some 'interesting' commutes ...
  • not enough trains: Glenrothes - Edinburgh train capacity already increased by 25% and there are no more carriages to be added
  • "Customers are able to use both Ferrytoll Park and Ride and Halbeath Park and Ride sites in Fife to leave their cars and take the bus to Edinburgh." .. err - you mean join the mahooosive queue of cars, trucks, WVM, coaches, buses, mobikes etc etc all going the same way ? Aye, that'll work well !
  • No cycling either :headshake: - very
Certainly an opportunity for a ferry/hoovercraft from Rosyth/SQ, Kirkcaldy/Granton or other, as had been tried in the past. Might pay it's way this time !

Going to be a bit chaotic.

A BIG bit.

Thanks for the info:smile:.
The meedja (BBC) has failed miserably to keep active travellers informed of the latest bridge status:angry:.

I'm sure it could cope with the weight of cyclists - wonderful opportunity to promote commuting by bike.

True indeed but the foot/cycle paths on both sides are being closed to allow maintenance crews access to fix things.

Now, if they opened 1 side, people could walk across (getting their mile-a-day :training:), then catch a bus to continue their commutes .. Sounds like a plan .. :okay:

Blowing a gale here, the rain was sore on my face on the commute home :B)
Still, it's quite mild for this time of year imo.
@Brandane I seem not to get wet anymore, even with lashing rain: must be my lucky waterproof trousers and my new Night Vision jacket

I was working today and got sent through to do a delivery to Springkerse retail park in Stirling. I left Hillington about 3.10 pm in a Transit van (so not even a slow lorry) and things were a bit busy on the motorway, as usual for a Friday afternoon. Got to Stirling and it was chaos with traffic heading for the Kincardine Bridge. Took me about an hour to get from the M80/M9 junction at Stirling services to Springkerse. Not much better on the way out either; it took me over 3 hours to do Hillington/Stirling/Hillington. How anyone is going to manage to do a daily commute in that for the foreseeable future, I just don't know. There would need to be an extremely well paid job at the other end for me to put up with that experience every day!
