Tried a few Marmalade etc and won't do a month...was going to let her drive whilst home for Xmas

Try Veygo or Dayinsurance.
also if you look at the comparison sites they used to let you choose short term.

Car insurance costs can double at certain times of day

The cost of car insurance can vary by as much as 123% depending on the time of day you buy it, according to Which?.
And it's bad news for nighttime shoppers, because the worst time to purchase was 3am-4am, followed by midnight-1am, their research found.
The consumer champion ran eight sets of quotes for a London-based driver over 24 hours on a leading comparison website, which returned quotes as varied as £441 and £519 for the same product.

Premium policies changed by even greater amounts than the cheapest deals.
The price of the AA's Silver policy more than doubled from £515 (9am-midnight) to £1,078 after 3am-6am.
Comparison site Confused.com told Which? that prices could increase by as much as 123% between midnight and 2am, while Quotezone said they increased by 22% on average between midnight and 6am.
AA said the dramatic variation in cost was a result of underwriters offering higher prices during hours when fraud was more common.
Meanwhile, Admiral said its claims data showed people who looked for quotes during unsociable hours made more claims, leading to higher rates.

Renewal due in the Mazda.
Last year, paid £560 fully comp with NC protection. I always seem to pay a lot but it's street parking in a not terrible, but not great area of Pboro.
This year's renewal came in at (with a couple amendments, retired now and less mileage) £480

Tried Compare and Direct line...they're all in the high £500/600.

Sticking with Yoga insure this year, at least £100 cheaper than the others I looked at

My renewal came through a few days ago for the Scud so did the same as you checking comparison sites and Direct Line.

Renewal was around £330 which didn't seem to bad with no added excess and the same extras included. Surprised that there were almost no increases.

Couple of the compare quotes were in the £400 region but everything else was £500+

Stuck with Aviva in the end on an auto renewal.

Daughter who passed her test about
four months ago got something from Uni that got her cheaper....a lot cheaper insurance.Worked out at about 88 quid a month with Hastings.
Negative is I'm petrified every time she takes the car out on her own
Positive is she can take me and pick me up from the pub whenever I call.

It's a nightmare for a while, I worried far too much but I'm over it now, plus lifts are ace, although I reckon I still give them more lifts than they give me.

Our car insurance renewal (Tesco I think) was cheaper this year than last year. We then went on comparison sites and could not find a cheaper deal than the renewal quote. That's the first time that has happened for many years

Just had my renewal through

comparison sites couldn;t find anything cheaper - which is pretty normal for me

I was with Tesco for about 5 years but checked every time and the renewal was always cheaper

This year will me my second time renewing with this lot - cheaper again

The money advisors say changing is normal and nearly always cheaper - just not been the case for me recently

I am wondering it the algorithms had be tweaked to keep it lower for a few years then try nudging it up and see what happens
Tried Tesco and they were nearly twice the price!!!

The market seems to be settling down for us older folk - still somewhat variable for youngsters. My new 'van' is about £400 a year, which is very acceptable given it's value. At least the Aygo came down to £900(ish) in November with son/daughter having use.

Tell your daughter that if she has any alcohol whatsoever in her system in the event of an accident, Hastings will refuse her claim. The same is true with Admiral.
They will then also cancel the policy leaving that as something to be declared on any insurance application for ever more.
Honestly, they are not worth being insured with.
