Is a flying boat a boat that flies or a plane that floats?

They haven't got any on the river near me.
"A flying boat is a fixed-winged seaplane with a hull, allowing it to land on water,"

Although there was the "Caspian Sea Monster", which was neither and both.

Ladies, gentlemen, Drago, you have broken me. I spent all of yesterday in deep consultation with my therapist. He’s good. He’s the same guy the Simpsons used.

He recommended, and I quote, “Run. Very far away. I’ll bill you.” Expert advice though that may be, I’ve decided instead to scale down my ambitions. This will involve either cherry-picking questions, or v e r y s l o w l y working my way through whatever backlog builds up, or a combination of both. Should even that expedient prove unsatisfactory, I may be moved to heed his advice after all, leaving the thread to the rhetorical wilderness. That business out of the way:
Why is a gentle walk, stroll or ramble in the countryside always referred to as a 'hike' in America?

Big as the country is, supplied with national and state parks, not to mention green lungs such as NYC's Central Park and LA's MacArthur Park (fabled of baked goods sacrificed to the elements),

there isn’t a culture of right to roam outside of official recreational spaces, as there is here.

The last real roaming went out with the buffalo.

We had no event like the Kinder Scout Trespass to help unlock the commons. It was barbed wire that made the West; and as poet and presidential inspiration Robert Frost wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors.” Then there’s our fierce love of the car, which surpasses even that of British pistonheads. Country roads took John Denver to the place he belonged, but the road itself may as well be the destination. Pedestrians have long been an endangered species.

Note also the popular North American colloquialism “Take a hike”, meaning go away, get lost.

So you see, the historical, geographical, and linguistic environment isn’t conducive to walking, strolling, or rambling. By process of elimination, that leaves the hike.

The thatched lardass was so awesome he avoided the draft five times. Vietnam didn't know how lucky they were that Cadet Bonespur was a lover not a fighter.
That was tactical to protect the economy. If he'd gone the war would have been over in days and arms manufacturers would be bankrupt.

He got the idea from Bill Clinton, a Democrat, who also decided he didn't have to go, but for some reason the democrats never mentioned at the time.

It's not a political thing. Wealthy white kids were all keen on avoiding the draft, including Bush minor.
But none of them mind wearing the military jackets for photo-ops when in office to show they care.

But this is meant to be a light-hearted thread, not an opportunity to knock the US so I will desist from further comments on the orange one with the penchant for ratings.

Bush Junior was too busy defending Texas from an attack by the Mexican airforce.

We've seen mention of the simplification of English through removal of 'redundant' letters: colo(u)r, c(a)esarian etc. OK, fair enough. But then why over-complicate others? Burglarize, veterinarian?

And then why remove whole words from phrases that completely change the meaning?

"I could care less". This literally means the opposite of what it's supposed to.
"The proof is in the pudding". No, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
