Another forum that I’m involved with makes some income from classified advertising. It’s not enough to pay all the bills, but it goes part of the way.

The way we do it is to have 2 separate classified “for sale” forums. One is for “Free ads”, which anyone can post a personal classified ad to - but only to a limit of £500 per month. If you want to sell something more expensive, or are “in the trade”, then you make a small donation per advert - £2 gets you an ad for up to £2k, and a fiver up to £5k.
Or £50 gets you a lifetime subscription, post as many adverts as you want!

My favourite part in all this is that while all you long standing users think Shaun is some sort of faultless demi-god he is bitching about half of you on another, non-public forum and wishing he could ban you even though he admits you don't actually break any site rules. Only thing standing in his way is you communicate outside the forum and so he knows everything would kick off.

It doesn't astound me. Having met Shaun and the multitudes of forum members on rides and socials. They are all a bloody good bunch.
in the 10 years of hanging around this forum I have forged lifelong friendships. I have also met a person on a forum ride whom I hope to spend the rest of my life with. For those things alone the small figure I donated is nowhere near enough.

Having worked behind the scenes as a mod on and off over the years, I cannot begin to describe to people how much work, time and effort Shaun puts into this forum and I for one am ever grateful.

No, as I already said, the long-standing users just know what Shaun's done for this site over the years, and appreciate it. So your trolling comments won't change our opinion of him.

@Shaun is providing a service. He has gently asked us to pitch in. All of us are paying the lesser of how much we think that service is worth and how much we are comfortable paying. You are comfortable paying nothing, or you think the service provided is worth nothing. Either way, that's your choice. It doesn't make us fools. I'm not paying Shaun because I like him. In fact, I suspect he doesn't like me and I have trouble liking someone who doesn't like me. But I like the service he is providing, I want him to go on providing it, I know it's not free and am happy to chip in. I'm a grown up and I pay my way.

Do you shop at Tesco, ever? If so, please stop. They are bad people and they have committed a serious fraud to pocket hundreds of millions. Plus they lied about Willow Farm. If you want to argue to us giving a few pounds to a guy running a website, I'm assuming you spend hours doing due diligence on your energy providers and supermarkets to make sure they aren't doing anything as corrupt as making a profit.

PS Where do you live that £3500 is a huge amount of money?
