I can understand where some of the questions are coming from, I suggest Shaun calls an amnesty and allows people to advertise their own bigger, better, brighter, cheaper cycling forum and then we can vote with our feet. I suspect there may be a few surprises, especially when members have seen this actual footage of Shaun I've unearthed!!

You don't know how much of the commercial software world works, do you? Most software houses charge for support. In fact, that very commonly is their major income stream. Because it isn't just a matter of licensing a bit of code and shoving it on your server: it has to be adapted to work with a whole host of other applications and software. Customising it and support for that process costs. 3.5k really is small beer: I'm surprised it isn't more.
So what if Shaun walks away tomorrow? It's his money he's shoved into this, he's every right to get it back. And why should he give up his time for free? I've punted a few shekels his way because I've got far more than that out of CC over the years. Not to mention, I've actually met Shaun, he's a genuinely lovely guy, he deserves a little back in return other than the usual abuse. Call that "fawning" if you want - I call that just paying your dues.

I could be imagining it, but I think that the Shopping Links link at the top of the main page has become slightly more prominent over the past few days! 
I still think it is too subtle though. It should be something much more obvious like "Please support CycleChat by shopping using THESE LINKS"!

No, it's never that simple. Even off-the-shelf software requires many hours (or weeks) of work spent configuring it, and probably a fair bit of development of scripts. Software developers cost money.

That's really offensive. As others have already said, this site has given all of us so much over the years, and whatever we pay (or have paid in the past), it's worth every sum.
