I just 'accidentally' went into a newly opened Giant bike shop.

If it does the job and does it well then how it looks is irrelevant. Not that I have a problem with it.
I certainly wouldn't spend £5k on a bike I don't like the look of, would you? It's not a £50 pub bike!

That said I will never need to spend 5k on a bike to do the job I require of a bike. Even 2k is excessive, I have no need for an aggressive aero race bike. For 5k, I'd certainly want something bespoke and unique, not a Giant (or specialized, or Cube, or Trek, or Rose, or Canyon, or Focus etc etc )

I'll concede the colour is nice, but not the rest of it. But if the OP wants a race bike, has the money, and likes it, fair enough. Depending on postcode, storage etc, might want to check the premiums for insurance. Probably £500 a year from a dedicated insurer

Ah I didn't see the price but I know a bloke at work who spent 7k on his a few years back and everyone at work commentated on it.

Recently I spent 1.2k on a Brompton that I hardly use.

I wouldn't spend 5k on a car but probably would on a bike if need be.I guess it's what floats your Boaty Mc Boatface.

Why did people comment on it? It's his money ultimately

Your £1200 Brompton will hold its value much better than the Giant as someone pointed out above

Liking the colour scheme.. but I find dropped seatstays fugly.

But at the end of the day it matters not one jot what anyone else thinks if the OP likes the bike.
That's an interesting point. The seatpost is fully integrated. They cut it to size during the bike fit, there is a little bit of adjustability for height as well.

My happy bike  only cost £575.
If it'll make you smile like mine does you have to buy it :bicycle:
Looks lovely.
I normally wouldn't spend more than a grand or so, on a bike. Generally, I'm no fan of 'brands' either. I know people who've spent more on their shoes, than I spend on a bike. However, the tech involved in this bike is quite impressive, it's at the higher end of their materials and manufacturing spectrum, so certainly not just spending big bucks on fancy stickers.

Now you might have as I do not know, but what would you spend your money on if you had more coming in each week than you needed by a large margin. A retired friend of mine and his wife have £400 a week coming in more than they need to live on, they have all the toys they require and indulge in long haul holidays.

General question not really aimed an Lonestar.

Think I'd have a Scott foil, in fact I would have a Scott foil over that. But still a nice bike. Looks much better with the integrated seat post than the adjustable one.

Mine goes into savings I guess, then I'm not retired. I probably have over a grand a month left most months (except August/September when I have home insurance, car insurance, car service, car tax, MOT in one big hit  )

I love to buy second hand, in the last 12 months I've bought 2 brand new bikes second hand (one a competition prize never used by winner).

Other used bargains include a lightly used 2 year old Bob Jackson Audax Club 631 frameset for £120 (£565 new)

I'm pretty careful with my dosh, my dad was a Yorkshireman. ^_^

Buy second hand with the usual care and attention and then go off to Cyprus, Tenerife, Spain etc... for a months cycling in the sun with the spare cash.

The Scott foil is old tech now,

I'd never buy second hand, too many pitfalls.
