Speedos are required to over-read your speed - there's a maximum error specified.
They are not allowed to under-read at all.
So if your speedo is reading 70mph, you might only be doing 60 mph, but you won't be doing 71 or more. My car, at an indicated speed of 70 (on a digital display) is doing 65 according to a GPS.
On motorways, I set the cruise control to 69, but that's because I'm childish
Just because detail.

Your first statement is false. Speedos are allowed to be accurate.

Your second statement is correct. There's actually a maximum allowable over-read, but it's extraordinarily 'generous'

Good call - I should have said allowed to underread.
In practice, everything has a tolerance, so nothing is 100% accurate, and the inaccuracy has to be to underread your speed.

Steve Coogan has been banned, just for two months instead of six, yes it’s wrong

Looking at the detail of the case he is now on 11 points as his licence wasn't wiped because he successfully asked for 5 not 6 points to be applied - the latter would have been the auto. 6 months ban, but his licence would have been wiped.

This is the third ban he's received in his driving career.

That takes quite an effort I'd have thought.
I've been far from a saint in my own driving career, but I only once collected a (fully deserved) speeding ticket. To be busted, what, a dozen times, suggests little attempt to obey the law or indeed use any sense at all. I would guess I've done more miles than Coogan too

Coogan previously successfully argued for a shorter driving ban at Crawley Magistrates’ Court in August 2019 after being caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone – saying an extended disqualification would mean he could not film the new series of Alan Partridge.

He was also banned from driving for 28 days at Worthing Magistrates’ Court in 2016 for travelling at 54mph in a 30mph zone in a Mazda sports car.

You'd think after getting six points you'd have the sense to slow tf down, at least for a bit.

The number of respectable speeders is shocking tbh esp as they are retired and don't need to rush anyway. But then if your in work time why would you speed!🤣

I just don't see how people are ignoring the speed limits (I do but...) Newer vehicle here and it reads speed limit signs/uses GPS so the limit comes up on the dash, and it's also got a HUD that shows speed you are doing and the limit - means you aren't looking down at the dash and you can keep an eye on speed. That said, I've never had points, and am keeping it that way.

I know the speed I'm driving. I know my speedometer overread at different reference points because I've checked it against GPS. I'm the same height whenever I drive so parallax error isn't a factor. I am wholly accountable for my speed so I take care, as I do with all aspects of my driving.

I think I love you Mr/Mrs Blues - a true angel in drivist form. Are you single?
Are you free on Friday??

At the end if the day, no excuses should be accepted that it would effect his ability to get to performances etc.
He's a very rich man...get a driver, he can afford it and probably not even notice the cost.
I agree. Or if they want leniency for his work, offer him to delay the ban until after the filming at which point he gets a ban of twice the duration (not sure if the law allows that). But if leniency is appropriate they could delay the ban starting until after filming maybe (and then run the full duration)?

I'm not suggesting there should be leniency, just that there are options that are not as "generous" as I feel he received.
