am I wrong that if you give your self brain damage you won,t get help from nhs and disability allowances from the state , - which we all have to pay for.

I sincerely hope you don't fall over in the street and hospitalise yourself with a head injury, as I will be really peeved that I am having to pay for your stupidity for not wearing a lid when outside.

I don't wear Hi-Viz either.
Look like a bag of blobby custard? I think not.

I have great difficulty in seeing any parallel between me pootling in to the shops on my bike and a bunch of sportspeople who cycle at high speed in close formation and clearly have different priorities to myself when balancing performance and safety.
That is for you to decide, at the time they weren't actually travelling that quickly yet his head hit whatever it hit with enough force to split the helmet, which had he not been wearing a helmet his head would have taken the full force.

But as I have stated my opinion is that you should be able to decide for yourself or not, but clearly others have very strong views from both camps, which seem to bring out some very childish traits in some people. Although I do feel there is a large element of keyboard warriorship, were everybody in the same room I'm sure the outpourings would not be as grand.

Two hard objects colliding will always cause damage.....

."Pro Helmet" and "Anti Helmet" are two hard immovable objects.....

Licramite - personally, I also value helmet wearing and believe it is of value - so I wear one. BUT I fully acknowledge that my belief is based on my belief and not on hard evidence. Yes I can give anecdotes of how my helmet protected me recently when another cyclist collided with me - but they could counter that with anecdotal evidence of where people have sustained injury as a result of wearing a helmet.
Those that don't wish to wear helmets, and find them restrictive, ugly, an unnecessary expense, uncomfortable or simply uncool (in terms of fashion and temperature) can not be told they are wrong. They just see things differently from you.

We could just as easily argue about the existence of God.......I feel a new thread coming on!

True, i dont think people wouldnt dare to call people names infront of their face, seems people are really tough on here lol. Must have to make up for somthing in real life.

I think you should wear helmets and they are great. If you dont that fine too, I dont care, but I dont want any1 to get hurt if they dont.

Just to make things clear. According to the BMA the health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks with or without a helmet. The overhead the average cyclist places on the NHS is lower than that of the average population so you assertion that the taxpayer us funding "negligent" non-helmet wearing cyclists is bunk.
Cycling covers a wide range of activities, from downhill racing to pootling to the corner cafe, each carries its own degree of risk. In this context, can you please clarify exactly what you mean by "you give your self brain damage"?

"Helmet's do look rubbish.
That's why I don't wear one"
Have you ever seen a serious head injury - they don,t look very cool either.
lots of people saying I,m stupid - not one saying why.
am I wrong that if you give your self brain damage you won,t get help from nhs and disability allowances from the state , - which we all have to pay for.
the bit about safety device on cars (which have all been objected to before they became standard and can kill you quite easily- air bags can and do kill, safety belts - can kill)
my point being if you object to a safety device on your bike - head- why arn,t you objecting to them on cars. -
so I say again - what reason is their for not wearing a helmet.
you have to wear protective clothing/helmet/high vis jacket in work (if in a dangerous environment)
you surround yourself in safety devices in your car
yet you think you are magically safe on a bike
look at how many motorcyclist get killed and they are far better protected than your average cyclist.
If a cycle helmet is no better than an egg box, thats still better than no protection at all.
I have had to deal with serious head injuries and roadside death - I did not enjoy it
why should you have to put some poor sod through that because your arrogant and reckless.
thats what I mean by selfish.

So just to clarify, non helmet wearers are arrogant, reckless, stupid and selfish. Have I missed anything ?

Still wonder why you are being called stupid ?

He said he has had to deal with serious head injuries. I hope he's not a bloody brain surgeon (although he did express it in the past tense which is a relief).

Oh and is there any need to be rude to Licramite here? I appreciate that many people cannot stand having to repeat basic facts to new protagonists. I can only suggest leaving it to those who have a vocation for it and the patience of a not very patient saint. A sticky of agreed "facts" wouldn't go amiss though.

With all due respect but if they are going to post comments such as the following then any reference to "stupid" is fair game.

[quote="Licramite, post: 2129482, member: 23536"
so wearing a helmet isn,t for your protection , its for everyones elses, who are going to have to sort out and support you after your own stupidity.
