It would appear the easier option.

I have to say that a double duvet is warmer on a single bed as it doesn't slide off to one side every 30 minutes and leave half your body out in the cold. I've with Night Train's Mum on this - if I see a guest single bed with a single duvet, I see a bad night's sleep coming up. Those who think otherwise must sleep like corpses.

It can be made worse as a guest - for example, if your sister has put every major domestic appliance on night-time timers for cheap rate electricity and they all come on at 2am with a noise like a bomber squadron flying underwater.

But will it be warmer
That's the thing.
In my mind a double duvet will just drape further off each side of the bed, it won't be warmer. If it is folded in half it will be thicker but not quite wide enough to cover properly.
A decent single duvet is quite enough, especially with an additional blanket if needed.
Besides, in a room that is little more then an 8' cube, with only 3 sq yards of external wall and window, there is 3 kw of heating in it! More then enough, even for an Australian visitor.

The bed is up against a wall. The edge of the duvet is tucked in. There is plenty overhanging the outer edge. Unless the guest is morbidly obese it will be fine.

However, by that reckoning I will need to get a king size on the double bed.
Then what size duvet do I use on my superking sized bed?

It will come untucked from the wall around the third time the skinny or obese occupant turns over. The hapless guest will wake up every 30 minutes and curse the host who appears to be happy to sleep beneath flapping postage stamps. And yes, we have king size on the double bed

Back when I did support work for adults with learning disabilities we 'fixed' one fella's night time incontinence by putting a double duvet on his single bed.

Not implying anything about Australians having bad dream irrigation issues of course

Heading out the other day on the bike, bumped off the kerb on to a side road needing to pull out and go right on the main street - car (not indicating) looks like it's about to turn so I stop.
Chav on his mobile turns the car and yells "look where you're eff-ing going"
Me - "get off your phone, then talk to me"
Then pedalled really fast and didn't breathe until I'd crossed the bridge and knew he couldn't follow me!

The scene is the tiny toilet room at work, the players are me and one of the engineers, me at the urinal and he washing his hands. Some words have been replaced with made up words.

Me - "Ah, new urinal blocks, I wonder how long it will take me to slice these in half?"

Him - "Don't fuppin cut the mud-warbling urinal cakes in fenkin' half!"

Me - "Oh?"

Him - "One of the two fwizzlin' people in this feppty room spend Tuesday fwubbing morning up to his sweenty-penty elbows in yo-po-po u-bends and urine... and I didn't see you anywhere nearby!"

Me - "I stayed well clear, there was some fooopy doopy in here up to his swenty-penty elbows in yo-po-po bends and urine!"

More of a monologue (used on several occasions over the last few months in India).

In a restaurant frequented mostly by westerners:

Me: I'm trying to give up passive smoking and your cooperation would be very much appreciated.

It fell on deaf ears every time. Ignorant twats!

'sorry, is the smell of my sponge and custard spoiling your cigarette !!!^_^'

we have the superking (I know) on a double bed. - touches the floor on both sides but allows us not to have that cold gap between 2 people trying hard to use the same quilt. My parents simply have 2 double quilts for a Kingsized bed instead.

Well, I think a single duvet is fine. If it's cold, I always prefer an extra layer like a blanket, on top of a duvet.

And really, the heater in there works very well.

Overheard on the tram up from Piccadilly, around Salford Quays.

Dad: Eh boys, look out soon, we'll see the best building in the world.
Boys: What?
Dad: What do you think is the best building in the world?
Older Boy: I don't know.
Dad: Look, over there, can you see the building with the red writing on it?
Older Boy: Yes
Dad: Can you read it from here?
Older Boy: No...
Dad: It says "Manchester...."
Older Boy: "United!"
Dad: Yes!
Older Boy: It's Manchester United Stadium!
Dad: Ay, do you know what it's called? "Old..."
Older Boy: "Trafford!"

<Pause>

Younger Boy: Dad, what's that building?
Dad (with slightly resigned sigh): It's a car park....
