CL - I take it we're still meeting tomorrow morning at 9?

Did you, by any chance, see anybody working on it. As Stu says, it's due to close on the 14th of June.

I'm thinking of coming up to York on the Thursday and recceing the bridge that day because the diversion isn't up to much.

I thought I saw an ETA in Cleethorpes somewhere in this thread but can't find it at the moment. Can anyone help? I'd like to purchase my tickets today and need a departure time.

Cheers

we think about 8. If bike reservations are not available, then bear in mind that I've yet to (re) purchase mine, and I'm probably going to ride down to Lincoln for a train leaving about midday. If the worst comes to the worst I might even catch a later train from Market Rasen

Hmm... I think I may just leave it to that morning and play it by ear.

You could also cycle to Scunthorpe, that's on the Northern Rail network which has a more liberal bike policy on the whole and get you back to Doncaster. If someone is heading for a particular station I'd probably prefer company so head where ever anybody else is.

well, CL and I rode the entire route today, and we had a pretty fine time of it. Some of the virtues of Mike's planning had escaped me on the first pass, but now I realise that the road south from Ulceby to Keelby is one of the greats - a succession of shallow rises and falls, each crest opening up a new view of Lincolnshire, a county which, hitherto, I'd thought of as featureless. We seemed to be swimming in green - nature was just swelling up around us.

And once again, the ride in to Cleethorpes was splendid - you get a real feeling of civic pride. And when we got to the seaside...donkeys! Donkeys taking children for rides along the beach.

All in all, it's a delight.

The Walmgate Bar thing was no obstacle at all - we simply moved some plastic barriers and wandered through, but the bridge over the Derwent is a real worry, and I think that it will have to be recce'd within 24 hours of the ride. I'm thinking of going up a day early.

That's the furthest, and the fastest, I've ever gone on my bike  Thank you, again, and I'm sorry that I am so dreadfully, dreadfully slow on anything more than the mildest of inclines.

It's a cracking good route, the mid-way cafe cheesecake was very fine and the cafe at the end serves rather good ice cream. What more could you ask for!

Work on Sutton Bridge set to start

BUSINESSES near York are expecting to lose trade when a damaged bridge is closed for repairs next month.

But East Riding of Yorkshire Council has brought forward the planned repairs to prevent future disruption.

Sutton Bridge, between Elvington and Sutton-upon-Derwent, was damaged by a lorry last January, and was reopened in Fabruary, subject to vehicle and speed restrictions.

Elvington Parish Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council are preparing to close the Grade II listed bridge on June 14 for up to six weeks of major repairs.

Thomas Fitzpatrick runs the Elvington Village Store, and said the closure would affect local businesses.

“They have to do it but I do not know why it should take six weeks. The council said they would be working from sunrise to sunset, and contacting households in the area asking them to support local businesses. We were almost 60 per cent down for the four weeks it was closed last time,” he said.

Mike Ball, principal engineer with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said scaffolding would be put up before the closure to save time. “It is regrettable that we have to close the bridge for such a length of time but due to the narrow width of the bridge, together with the extensive and complex nature of the work, it is unavoidable,” he said. “Carrying out the work in the middle of summer will allow contractors to make best use of the natural light as they work around the clock to reopen this bridge as soon as possible.”

The bridge and approach road from Sutton-upon-Derwent will be resurfaced, and the existing traffic signals will be improved and relocated. Pedestrian and cyclist access to the bridge will still be available, but all vehicles will be diverted along the A1079 and via local roads past Newton-upon-Derwent.

A spokesman for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “The repair works will require closure of the bridge, but residents’ access to nearby properties should not be affected by the resurfacing of the approach road.”
